Question about Apple MacBook Air
I would make sure that the screen is cutting power in clamshell mode. These are prone to overheating and it might be cooking your processor. Get SMC fan controller to boost your fans if you feel it getting warm often.

That means Hardware Error. It is a gray iron curtain with a black dialog box. Most likely bad Ram/Memory, but If warranty, call Apple. Otherwise there should be a diagnostics CD or DVD that came with your recovery Disks. It should tell you what's wrong if it can boot before the Iron Curtain comes down again.
You can try swapping ram with a recent age mac or pc laptop and see if it repeats.

Pressing and holding the power button will shut down your computer. Then you can restart it. You can also tell the computer to restart with the restart command but that does not alway work depending on the problem.
