C640 power issue

Hi...thanks for your post on the power connector issue. I have myt C640 apart now and cannot get the whole plastic case off so I can get to the underside of the motherboard to see if I have a broken soldering point. Any ideas? You can email me at and I thank you very much.

To my surprise, dell provides dis-assembly instructions online:

I have the same problem but didnt see a bad solder (resoldered all connectors with no success). I may have a bad AC power supply or bad charge circuit - no idea)

C640 stopped powering up

If it will not power on from battery or AC adapter, Either the power switch is bad - OR the motherboard is shot - OR the LCD is not working. I would suggest taking it to a local PC shop and having it diagnosed, usually this costs about $30 I work for TechSupportPros of Spokane, WA and charge $30 to diagnose computers.

Hi iv got a dell c640 when i swith it on the power goes off before it boots up I nearly got to safe mode once but power went again. The battery is ok but after it turns it self off its showing no signs of...

sounds like a motherboard port. remove the battery and try to power it on again with the AC adapter. If same issue, try another AC adapter, try removing the hard disk and DVD drive if available, and test it again.. If no luck, request for a motherboard replacement if within warranty, otherwise, you will have to contact their sales support to purchase a replacement board

Dell latitude c640

Both Dell Part numbers 18THT and 5W299 are 8X DVD-ROM Drive Modules. DPN 18THT is compatible with Latitude C series and DPN 5W299 is compatible with Latitude D series. The two drives have different and incompatible connectors.

Your Latitude C640 is a C Series Latitude. You can therefore not use DPN 5W299.

If you need a DVD drive module, get DPN 18THT or an alternative Latitude C series drive.

Dell c640 overheat

There would be no way to know if that is the case without opening the machine. I suggest taking it to a certified
laptop repair technician near you ( a Dell Store if under warranty ), and explaining the issue to them. I have not seen
this happen myself ( the heatsink popping off ) but that's not to say it can't happen. I suggest having the laptop
looked at sooner than later, as each time you turn it on and it overheats it reduces the life expectancy of your
