Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I am receiving the following message when I attempt to access my Western Digital My Book 500 GB: "Ox8007045D I/O Device error" I can see that my photos are still there but cannot open them or copy into the drive. According to my notebook, I have over 350 GB free so it does not appear to be full. Please let me know if this can be fixed with a patch or if the external hard drive is not repairable. Thank you.

I have this 500GB external hard drive hooked to a Windows 2000 server via a USB cable. We have been scanning documents as PDF files and putting them on this drive with no problem for months now. The other day , it stopped. It will not scann to this drive. I tried to move a file from the hard drive on the server to the external hard drive , and I got an error that states" no free space available ." there is at least 400GB of space available on this drive. I can see the files on the drive. I can browse to it, but it seems to be a slow connection now. Any ideas on what could be stopping this transfer and giving me an incorrect error message?

Happened to me too in both file backup and computer backup. I supposed MS will address in the future. For now, go to the system settings and unchecked the drives so they no longer create shadow copies . Apply the new settings to erase all existing shadow copies. Then reset by checking the boxes you unchecked. Now try to backup the whole computer again. It appears a shadow copy error is conflicting with the backup process. Once you delete all shadow copies (restore points) it will work.

Some software in windows might be accessing the drive in background, use a software like USB unlocker so that you can close the software trying to access your drive.

MY WESTERN DIGITAL MY BOOK 500 GB WILL NOT COMMUNICATE WITH MY COMPUTER. I'VE CHECKED THE USB CONNECTION AND THEY WERE FINE. WHAT DO I DO?

Power down the drive, disconnect it, and then power it back up ... does it come up? If not, get new drive. Connect the drive to a known-good USB port (e.g. one that you've demonstrated your mouse can work on). Does Windows recognize it (****, "Installing External Device", etc.)? If not, try downloading new drivers from the Western Digital site. If it is recognized by not responding, you have a hard disk failure. If it is new, return it to the manufacturer ("infant mortality"). If not, good thing you have a back up, right? If you need to get data off of it, you may find you can get short-term access by using some low level disk access tools, available on Sourceforge.net.

When I right click a file, select "send to" then WD digital book as the recipient, the following error message "the target cannot handle this type of document" is received

You have to save documents to the drive.

When you send the documents to the drive it means that you want the drive to read them for you.

Not being a program that recognises the document it comes up with that error.....

WD 500 GB Passport Formatting error

you may have a FAT32/NTFS format problem between your wd500 and your pc. or differently formatted partitions. right click on their device letters on 'my computer' and look at 'properties'. should tell you how they're formatted and # of partitions, etc.
just a guess!
good luck!

"can't find sector" errors!

Just like we have a method for storage, like tupperwares and ziplock, so do harddrives. The tiny places on a drive that stores the info are called blocks and sectors. Sometimes certain application rewrites the data on a drive so you can go around bad sectors, but thats usually signs of a drive starting to fail. I would back up what you can, and cash in on the manufacterer's warranty if its still covered.
