The gas valve should not be opening unless the glow igniter glows and sends a signal to the gas valve. I suspect a small leak in either the gas pipe or at the gas valve. You will have to get to the gas valve to perform a leak test. While the dryer is open, replace the igniter.

Even though it glows sometimes it is still not working properly. if you dryer is gas check out this gas no heat tip.... If you have an electric dryer, you can have many different things that can go wrong causing the dryer not to heat. check out this electric no heat tip... heatman101

Hello - From what you are describing, if the dryer only heats up sometimes but provides a gas odor, it could possibly be a defective gas supply or igniter. Try resetting the unit by unplugging it or flipping the household circuit breaker off. Wait approximately ten minutes and turn on the fuse for the dryer. Turn on the dryer and select a normal cycle. If it proves to be ineffective and if the issue continues I suggest contacting a professional to move forward accurately. Keep in mind since it is such a complex unit, the technician will likely verify that it doesn't have a defective sensor, control board or high limit thermostat.
