Question about Hitachi 42HDS69 42 in. Plasma Television

1 Answer

Some times when turning it on from the standby mode, it will flash blue into the on mode and then go back into the red standby mode. Some time I need to turn it on and off 50 times to get it back on. Could it be the main board I'll need to change?

This sounds like a very common issue.

If set is hard to turn on (takes several tries)but will eventually turn on here is what my guess would be.

Every set has a standby power supply that is running 7/24 if the set is plugged in and it supplies voltage to the remote circuit that turn on the main power supply for the tv and hence turn the set on.

This is an area where companies cut corners by using lower rated voltage caps. By this I mean Standby usually provides under 10 volts to trigger the set on----what they do is use filter caps rated at say 10 volts max in a circuit with 9 volts (example)=with the standby on all the time the filter caps (electrolytic caps) dry out and fail.

The problem usually begins where you have to turn set on or or two times and gradually gets worse--takes longer and more tries to get it to come up.

Once on it will stay on until turned off for a period of time.

The caps will begin to work better (regain some of the capacitance) as they get hot--hence one it is on it will seem ok.

The beauty of this problem is most of them happen when set is a year or two old (no warranty) and all you have to do is look at the top to locate bad ones.

They are generally black or blue and round and vary in --they have two connections each--a + for positive and a - for negative--not unlike a battery which in a way they are. The + and - are marked on top and bottom of most boards.

They are easy to replace and not expensive parts.

The tops are silver and metal looking with creases on top and if bad they will be puffed up on top---tops must be perfectly flat with no brown material leaking top or bottom.

If this is your problem once you id them (make a drawing) you can begin.

Here is the critical part---on each cap is also marked the value like 220uf 10 vdc---220 micro farad at 10 volts maximum.

If you find for example 6 puffed up and all are 10 vdc replace them with the same value capacitance (like the 220 uf) but go up to at least in this case (from 10 volts) to a 16 or higher rated voltage cap.

The only issue is when you go up in voltage rated value the cap is larger so sometimes there is an issue of physical space for the replacement on the board to fit them in.

The reason they cheapen these sets in this way is if 10 caps and you make 25,000 sets there is a considerable savings in parts cost.

They do not care as long as it lasts past the usual one year parts warranty.

I have taken the time to be long winded because this really sounds like it may be the problem you have.

See attached photo of a typical cap and if you have questions or need advice let me know

I have had some issues with high ESR readings in the capacitors in the scaler circuits in those units. Do you have an ESR meter to check the caps in circuit?

SOURCE: Problem with Hitachi P50H401 Plasma TV - Will not

I have the same model, P50H401 and it developed the same problem two days ago. This set is 2 1/2 years old in service, being purchased in December 2007. The original manufacture date was October 2007.

The set was turned on and operating at the time and then promptly shut down by itself. The front blue LED power indicator began flashing four times in a loop or cycle.

The flashing LED sequence in this instance points to a problem with one of the following boards: PSU, X-Sus, Y-Sus or SDRs (there are two SDR boards, SDR-U and SDR-D, both are connected off of the Y-Sus board on the left hand side of the frame when rear facing). The set shuts down to prevent further damage to other boards or components.

I could power cycle the set but it would shut down after after a few seconds. Power LED would stay solid, I could hear the PS relays switching, and audio would output through the speakers. Then as the screen was just about to illuminate, the entire set would just shutdown. The blue LED would again go into the 4X flashing sequence.

I could not visually detect any signs of severe component damage on the main PS board. The two large electrolytic capacitors which have been mentioned as problematic in other threads seems fine. The where slightly raised on the top surface, but not blistered or completely blown open.

The only indication of component damage that I could detect visually was on one of the small surface mounted ICs on the SDR-U board.

Through reading other posts on this site, I learned that I was able to remove the suspect SDR-U board and then re-power the set. Doing this proved that the PS, X and Y Sus, and the SDR-D boards where o.k. The PS held, and the lower half of the screen illuminated. (I would only do this for as brief a period as required to determine if the the other boards would function and the screen would illuminate. Do not pro-long operation in this state so as to not cause further damage.)

It was somewhat difficult to locate the correct SDR-U board. My local service rep did not have one in stock, and the Canadian parts distributor was also out of stock. They estimated 10 - 14 business days to order one up from the U.S.A. (Hitachi closed their consumer electronics division in Canada back in 2009.)

By chance, I checked with another service rep in an adjacent town. He had a board for the P55. We did a visual comparison on the two boards and determined that it would be compatable.

The easy part was removing the defective SDR-U board and installing the replacement. The hard part was re-alinging the three ribbon tabs into the respective connectors on the SDR board. Be careful with these ribbons. The other end of each is fused to the plasma panel screen, so if you damage them, your screen is rendered useless.

I initially had the same problems as others have posted with having black or gray lines on the screen when the SDR-U was replaced. After gently adjusting the position of the ribbons as they are seated in the connectors, the lines disappeared. This was a slow and frustrating procedure, but it worked, Be patient.

check your sdr boards. you can test them with a multi meter. they are known for going bad. what happens is the two caps by the output go bad on the power supply and they make the sdr boards burn out. you can replace the two caps and save lots of money. then please check out this web page http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/hitachi/38229-hitachi-p50h401-led-flashes-3-times.html

This web page has info about repairing these. The 4 flashing lights maybe the x sus or the y sus but it's still a good idea to check the sdr boards since its a common failer. I had one tv with a bad sdr board flash 3 time and another set it was flashing 4 times.

These blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit stage inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power led, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating, to many popular brand TVs and other devices. 6.Low battery Triple red flashes
7.Pairing mode Blue/red alternating flashes
8.Missed call Purple flashes. Press the call control button
to cancel flashing light.
9.Incoming call Triple blue flashes when ringing.
Power on and off:
1.Turn on the headset Press and hold the call control button until the

If none of this is helpful then it may be that your battery is dead, if that is the case then you will need to replace the whole headset. The battery's are not replaceable.

Pressed power, heard the unit turn on, heard the tv show sound for a moment then it went into standby mode and the red light flashes six times, then pauses, six times then pauses, over and over and over. ...

Either your power supply is bad and needs replaced, or their is other circuitry issues. Bets to have a trained technician look at this and give you a quote for repair, it might be cheaper in the long run to replace the set.

My GL2 only works when I turn it on to playback mode. When I try to turn the camera on in camera mode, it doesn't work. What could the problem be?

There is a simple solution to that... You see under the 'card-tape' switch? There's the red button for recording... attached to that button the is a switch that says 'tandby or lock'.... if you have it in 'lock' it will not let you go to record mode, you have to change it back to 'standby' and that should solve your problem.... Anymore question just e-mail me at Jacob.Bahling@Live.com and I was wondering if you had a copy of the installation CD I can buy or have.... or maybe you could tell me where to get it? Thanks.
