I am having trouble getting my Dayton Portable Oil fired Heater Model # 2E218E to keep running.

May be the primary control if you already replaced the photocell. Make sure the photocell is in direct line of sight with the flame.

Dayton oil fired heater

Most likely the flame sensor is dirty and needs to be cleaned. The sensor is a small rod that sits in front of the burner. Try using steel wool to clean it.

I've replaced igniter/sensor on my dayton 3E132 infrared heater, will light but runs for a while and shuts down, also do you need it hooked up to a thermostat

Yes, it should be hooked to a millivolt wall thermostat. Doing that should solve your problem (overheating). However, the millivolt wiring can be no longer than 10 ft.

Runs for short period and shuts off

bruce how658,

You have a classic reddy heater problem. Actually reddy heat and dayton are the same. They have a fuel pump which is dependent upon the pressure of the air filter to maintain exactly 4.5 psi or your unit will do what you describe. This is an easy fix and I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4124129-yearly_maintenance_reddy_heaters which explains the problem, where to get the parts and how to do the repair.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.
