I have 10,000 ohms across coil. Is that good?

10,000 ohms across the coil is too high. Resistance across the coil of a relay should range from about 50 ohms to few hundred ohms. hope this help your problem

Is there a headlight relay on a 1987 Ford Ranger 2.9 V6 4WD---that can go bad causing headlights to quit working? Can a relay be tested? If there is one where is it located?

Hi. I can try to help with one part of your question, testing relays, think of it a two separate parts.
Usually they are 4 terminal devices.
Part one, a voltage is sent across a (winding)coil, that goes to earth.
Part two, THAT operates a switch, one of those terminals goes to a power source, and the other to the headlight bulb.
Part two terminals usually are bigger in size than part one.
a meter should show a reading across the winding (coil) part one, and part two, should show "zero" ohms across the switch contact, when power is applied.
(This is only correct, if, the relay is working, so have a practice on a known good unit)

Testing an Ignition Coil

This testing procedure is valid for most automotive coils. Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between the side terminals of the coil. Do this with all of the wires to the coil disconnected. You should see 0.75 to 0.81 ohm of resistance. Then check the resistance between either side terminal and the center high tension terminal. The reading should be 10,000 to 11,000 ohms. Any significant deviation from these numbers would indicate that the coil is defective.

I have a 1985 Toyota Cressida and the horn and glovebox light don't work (not sure if that's connected) I have tried changing the fuses under the bonnet, and got a new horn and light globe but still...

85 is an old car, and will have lamps out, a given
so replace it. the lamp.
the horn can fail many ways.
the horn fuse blown.
the horn relay bad.
the horn is bad.

we dont just gue$$ we use a tool called a voltmeter.
i put the meter across the horn terminals.
if just 1 , the meter goes there, an other lead to body ground
you mate, then honks
if the silent voltage goes to 12vdc, then the horn is bad. or
the base is rusted and is no good now. rust is and electrical insulator to a horn.
if no 12v, go to the relay,
i see the output of relay is dead, no 12vdc honkiing
i then check across the coil of said relay, coil, pins.
its 12v, that is a bad relay
its 0v, that is a bad horn switch
lets pretend the other relay contact pin is 0v. that is a blown horn fuse.
and guess what , fuse that look bad are, but ones that look good can be bad.
so my same meter, i flip the dial to RX1 ohms or low ohms
and read the fuse , and its infinity, dang, a hair line crack inside...
0 ohms is a good fuse.

How to test a coil with a voltage meter

There are two places to check resistance. Set the voltmeter to ohms, and pull off all wires on the coil. Measure the resistance between the plus and the neg. terminals on the coil. Second, measure between the coil tower (where plug wire connects) and the negative terminal.
You have to know the specs for your coil, so you will know if your tests are within the specs. Consult a repair manual for your vehicle, or ask at the dealer service department, or maybe the parts person there will know (then again, it's an '87, they'd have to look it up somewhere...).

Your first reading should be low-on the order of 0.8-2 ohms, or maybe 3 ohms at most. The second reading is always pretty high, say 8,000-10,000 ohms, or 8 to 10 kilo ohms. You have to know the specifications for your coil-it would be in a repair manual. If the coil falls within the specs, it is good.

Dodge neon has no spark.already le intal crank position sensor and cam sensor.and yet has no spark.that may be.

remove electrical plug from coil,with test light check tosee if u are getting power to the coil with the key on.(remove fuel relay during the testing) if there is power to coil then check resistence on coil. with plug still disconnected.take ohm meter and connect to the two outside plugs to check ohm resistance 0.45 - 0.65 ohms then use ohm meter to check secondary resistance.connect ohmmeter across the two secondary terminals of each coil. resistance 11.5-13.5 k-ohms. if all checks out test wires and plugs. hope this will help!!!

My 1999 buick lesabre will not start. I have gasoline and the battery is good.

Hmm, do you have spark? fuel pressure must be between 30 - 40 psi test the ignition coils by connecting an ohmmeter between the coil towers ie 1and 4 with the key in the OFF position do the same with the others as well there are 3 coils all should have readings between 5 an7 thousand ohms if so the secondary side of the coils are good, if there is no spark at all try an ignition module. this is under the 3 coils they sit on the ign module..You can also test and or replace the spark plug wires, if a wire is 10 inches long it should read 10,000 ohms or less.. No more than 1000 ohms per inch is the spec.. hope this helps good luck

My car is not getting fire the coil is fine and the spark plugs are brand new battery is fine starter is trying to turn over but the engine just won't start

Possible cause: failed pulse pickup. This device is located inside the distributor and are not uncommon failures.
If you have a multimeter, you can measure at the thin leads coming out of the distributor on the Ohms scale. Disconnect and measure across them. They will typically have ~1,000 Ohms resistance but could be higher and still be OK. If it measures very low (<10Ohms) or very high (10,000 Ohms) the coil is defective and these are normally separately replaceable.
If you need to replace it; 'shop' it, the prices are all over the map on this thing.
