If the engine stops when it is hot, check the air intake, and the air filter.
On some engine there is also an hot air intake going to the carburetor, check it out.

Hi there
It sounds to me that the air filter needs to be changed and the engine will need a flush to get get rid of any dirt that may be trapped in the engine, bad gas can also cause problems but is rarely the case. After the engine has been flushed and the filters changed the the pressure washer should work fine, you can buy an additive to mix with the gas to prevent further problems like this one.

Good luck and kind regards

Buy yourself a bottle or two of gasline antifreeze... use one now and keep one for a spare... it sounds like you have some water in the fuel from condensation. when the tank gets low after running for awhile is when it starts sucking water.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, it stops because the engine has overheated. A couple of ideas to consider if it is using a Honda GX390 engine:

  • choke off after starting;
  • clean air filter;
  • lead-free gasoline used (not leaded nor gasohol);
  • TY15977 gasoline stabilizer used when stored long;
  • blower housing or cooling fins clear;
  • engine oil (which you have addressed).
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

First off it should have Automatic cool down system that cycles water through it and pushes warm water from the pump onto the ground if this is not happening that might be causing it to shut down to protect itself.

Clean Debris
Daily or before use, clean accumulated debris from cleaning
system. Keep linkage, spring and controls clean. Keep area
around and behind muffler free from any combustible debris.
Inspect cooling air slots and openings on the pressure washer.
These openings must be kept clean and unobstructed.
Cleaning system parts should be kept clean to reduce the risk of
overheating and ignition of accumulated debris

    Bad gas wouldn't cause it to need cooling down before it started back up. Something is overheating it and causing it to shut off.

Honda GX270 I have no spark. Where to start. Can oil alert be by passed?

Oil alert or the module where the oil alert wire plugs in to could be faulty. You can remove all the wires at the coil for test including the kill switch wire (always use a new spark plug for test, then place the new plug in stroage for later use). I test the coil off the engine on a growler. If the oil alert components are faulty, do not repair. Just check the oil more often. Good luck

Thread the dip stip back in to get a true reading of the oil level. Either oil filler may be used to top off the crank case. There is only one crank case - the oil on one side is the same oil seen in the other filler.

I have a john deere 3000psi pressure washer with similar problem. Running fine then a puff of smoke and it shut down. I checked the oil and found it full of water. Not only that but since I still had the water turned on, the water was flowing out of the dip stick tube. I'm trying to find a solution online and will pass any information on.

John Deere will replace the cap for free; they acknowledge the vendor who supplied Briggs & Stratton gas caps provided faulty caps. Call 1-888-228-3068 then 1 (English), 2, 1 and a technician will ask you for model number and Serial Number (which they need to replace the cap). Don't drill a hole in your cap: debris will find a way into the gas tank and end up possibly fouling the engine. Bob from NJ

I am going to suggest a tune of of the engine. Change the oil and oil filter. Check the air filter is clean and replace it if it isn't. A new spark plug.
