Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

Back button in browser does not ''stick''

My Acer AMD PC with Vista Home Premium has a problem with the back function when browsing the Net, whether I use IE, Firefox or Chrome. When I click on the back button, it goes to the previous page but as soon as I move the cursor into the active area to click on a link it jumps forward to the page I just left. Sometimes trying repeatedly gets me a successful click, but mostly the back function is unusable.

This problem occurs when using Google, navigating within a site or following links between sites.

The computer has been this way since I set it up several months ago. Windows (Vista SP1) and browsers are fully updated. I was running Norton earlier but uninstalled it and now have Sunbelt Vipre for virus and spyware protection. Scans indicate non problems that way.

Any ideas would be most appreciated, as browsing gets very tedious with this problem. Other computers (XP) on my network are fine.

    Linda:

SUCCESS. That seems to have done the trick!!! Thank you.

Just to be a little more explicit, I did as you suggested and went to the Advanced page of Internet Options. There I found two possibilities:
    1. Restore Advanced Settings, and
    2. Reset.
I did the first, as I wanted to avoid the more drastic Reset. It seems to have worked. Unfortunately, I didn't note all the settings first, so don't know what changed.

The interesting thing is that it cured the problem for Firefox as well as IE. I had previously assumed that the problem was elsewhere, as the Control Panel item seems to be specific to IE and I use mainly Firefox. I guess this just shows how intimately IE is woven into Windows.

    Thank you again.

I went to Control Panel, Internet Options, Advanced and clicked on "Phishing Filter - turn off automatic website checking." This fixed the problem not only in Internet Explorer, but also in Firefox (which is my main browser) and Chrome.

IS MY COMPUTER COMPATABLE WITH WINDOWS 7

The specifications of your computer are top of the line and can handle different applications and soft ware. Based on the hardware specs you've posted this should support Windows 7. But keep in mind that some of your hardware components may need be compatible w/ Windows 7 ( like bluetooth, camera, lan adapter, or wlan). In other words they don't have software driver that is compatible w/ Windows 7.
Also, based on Acer's support site: http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/desktop/0000/Acer/AspireM5100/AspireM5100sp2.shtml
This are the only Operating Systems that this model supports: Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2
Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2
Windows Vista™ Home Premium
Windows Vista™ Home Basic
