Question about Dishwashers

Siemens Dishwasher - no wash cycle

Hi Tresilla

Probably the first thing is to identify the model! I acquired the appliance when I bought my current house about 6 years ago and I dont have any info on the dishwasher, apart from being Siemens. Do you know where the model number is stored?

The background to the problem is that the outlet blocked up a few weeks before Xmas. This also happened to me a few years ago and I resolved by taking outside and using a hose pipe applied to the outlet.

I tried this solution again but internally one of the connectors parted. I ended up, probably inadvisedly, turning dishwasher upside down to drain water. Subsequently removed blockage by blowing up a tube inserted into outlet. Dishwasher now drains OK but just doesn't go to wash cycle.

I read about the anti flooding device. Visibly that looks OK ie not stuck in up position, no water in base.

Can you help me with my next move?

Cheers

Stewart

    fyi I found te model no - t'is SE24200GB.

  • wolfysmith_2 Jan 12, 2009

OK Ive followed the suggested link which tells me that either the float valve is defective or the water inlet valve is defective.
Re the latter, are we just talking about where the water supply enters the back of the dishwasher. Or is this located somewhere internally - rem this is a Siemens dishwasher SE24200.
Re the latter, the float isn't stuck physically. Is there a way to test whether the switch is working.

    Cheers

I haven't quite got the hang of this website! - someone suggested going to

    http://www.repairclinic.com/0088_9_1.asp...

but that solution has disappeared now - my last comment was in relation to that suggestion. I dont think the timer is a problem.

  • wolfysmith_2 Jan 12, 2009

I don't think there is a problem with the water heating cycle nor the timer. Water is simply not entering the dishwasher. I need a little more info about checking the float valve or the water inlet valve on a Siemens dishwasher. Cheers.

It was the antiflood device. It looked as if it wasn't stuck or anything but after a few gentle wiggles, dishwasher decided to work. Much obliged.

Hi!

The fault is with the flow valve and pressure chamber and an associated filter that is blocked. Also, USE A RINSE AGENT i.e JET DRY ON ITS HIGHEST SETTING and see if it gets unblocked.

    Power OFF, Plug OUT.
    Remove bottom basket completely.
    Remove filters.
With the aid of a torch, examine the sump area. There is a tangential opening at the 6 O'Clock position, on the actual curved wall of the sump, at the front of the sump. This leads off left, upwards and backwards. It is a corrugated plastic pipe, and leads to the water level sensors/measuring devices.

With the aid of a slim bottle-brush, bent into a gentle curve, GENTLY & CAREFULLY rod the pipe out. You may get a substantial amount of greasy deposits out. This is quite a common fault.
Replace filters and bottom basket, and run the machine.
The base may also have water in it, causing the drain pump to run indefinately.

Also, remove and check the control board and check that everything looks normal like No burnt solder or no burnt connections or a burnt solder joint

This is often the fill valve. You can test the fill valve coil for continuity with a ohm meter, no needle movement = bad fill valve. You can also test the fill valve for 120 volts at the fill valve with a volt meter, power there and no fill = bad fill valve. No 120 volts there, you will have to trace power back to find the trouble maker. Test things like the float and float switch, wires and timer. Fill valves are very bad for working once or twice and then quitting, if your dishwasher fills the first and second fill cycles and then no more water through the rest of the cycle, replace the fill valve. You will need to remove the access panels to get at the fill valve. Dishwasher fill valves also have a screen built into the valve entrance, this can also get all clogged up and need to be cleaned.

It is possible that the drain is plugged. Remove the round plastic drain cover at the bottom of the dishwasher. Feel around for stuff that might be plugging the outlet. BE careful however because there will be a sharp spinner blade in front of the drain opening. Kind of like the blade in a blender. It is supposed to chop food solids before they enter the drain and the pump...

Hi When initiating a wash cycle the machine will not start and the red inlet/outlet light comes on or what ?

I have experienced a similar fault. When initiating a wash cycle the machine will not start and the red inlet/outlet light comes on. I usually follow a set procedure as follows (But you can skip this lot and go straight to 'plan B' described at the end if you like.....).
1. Firstly I switch off the electrical supply at the outlet then remove the filter and check the water level in the sump - usually the water level is too high and I use cups and a sponge to transfer water to a bucket until there is virtually no water left in the sump.
2. While down there I flick over the metal retaining spring clip (it hinges over into the sump) then lift out the impeller cover and inspect each paddle and remove debris if there is any blockage.
3. Refit the impeller housing by entering the outlet pipe first and pressing down firmly - clip the metal retaining spring over the top until secure.
4. Clean and refit all the filters.
5. I then inspect the outlet hose by releasing the connection to the outlet pipe - occassionally this can be slightly restricted or clogged but is often free running.
6. I isolate the water inlet and unscrew the brass inlet connection (mine has a bulky unit that has a plastic cover and I suspect contains a device to detect inlet water flow). Upon inspection there is a small screen/filter and on some occasions this has appeared to be clogged up with hard water limescale deposits but is easily cleaned with a toothbrush.
7. Reconnect brass inlet connection and open water isolation valve.
8. Electrical power is reconnected and I try to initiate a wash cycle.
9. If the red light for Inlet /outlet still comes on and the unit still won't work I then carry out plan B ...
Plan B is really simple. Switch off the electrical supply, go and have a cup of tea. Return to the dishwasher and set the temp dial to 'STOP'. Reconnect the electrical supply, switch the unit to the ON position then press the start button and select a wash cycle. The inlet outlet light has gone out and the unit starts its wash cycle. Hey presto... Now why didn't I try plan B in the first place?

The cycle doesn't complete If the cycle doesn't complete, check these:

Water-heating cycle
Timer
Water-heating cycle Many dishwashers heat the wash and/or rinse water to a higher temperature, as the cycle calls for it. In these cycles, the dishwasher pauses after it has filled with water, waiting for the water to reach the pre-set temperature. What happens next, depends, as follows:

  • On some units, the pause is timed and the unit continues after the allotted time.

  • On others, the cycle can't continue until the water reaches the higher temperature. If you have this type of dishwasher and the water isn't being heated (say, because of a problem with the heating element or thermostat), after the unit stops at the heating cycle, it never continues. When you repair the heating-system problem, the "cycle problem" is fixed too.

Timer Timers don't often fail. But if every other part of the dishwasher seems to be working properly and the timer knob seems to be stuck in one place--doing one function continuously--the timer may be at fault. Dishwasher timers can't be repaired. If yours is defective, replace it.

Hello. Our siemens built-in dishwasher is not cleaning properly in the upper tray. While there is some element of cleaning there remains a residue in the upper tray only.
