I had the same problem
on my brother MFC-9320CW
I set it up to work over wifi and it worked well for months then i started having issues one day (showing offline)
i had to restart the printer all the time to be able to print again (showing as Online).
but after 10 - 15 mins it lost connection again and I could not see it on network (PING IP)
I couldn't even web-interface to the printer in the browser using its IP address (** see below)
It appeared to point at a printer problem
I know this may seem strange but eventually my investigation came to finding that it was a router problem - well my router anyway.
It doesn't make sense i know - but it was definitely a bizarre router problem in my case.
After that i was able to web-interface to the printer
I RECOMMEND YOU DO THIS:-
1. turn off your printer
2. restart your router
3. wait 2 mins
4 restart your printer
IF YOU FEEL CONFIDENT TO DO EXTRA TECHNICAL/NETWORK CHECKS
Also allows you to manage things at your machine
5. ** find out the IP address of the printer - either on the printer itself - menu>network>IP
ive setup my printer to be static IP so i always know what it is
OR If you know how to get into the control panel (web-interface) of your router then it will show active connections and IP addresses of equipment - including your brother printer
6. i use the web-interface as it immediately shows me if i have a dropped wifi problem--If the printers control panel is avalible in my browser then all is fine

SOURCE: Printer doesnt come out of sleep mode (Brother MFC7420)

I'd be happy to give you the solution to this problem :)

You'll want to go into the menu and choose these options: 1,6, and 2. The final stop should give you the sleep menu.

The printer is setup for a default of 5 minutes. But you can change it from 00 to 99 minutes. To just shut it off, press the Options and Start button simultaneously and that will do the trick.

Here is the link to the manual: http://www.brother.ca/en/products/pdf/manuals/MFC7820N-UG.pdf

If I wasn't specific enough, the solution is on page 2-6

SOURCE: My Brother MFC 9440 CN Printer won't wake up once

Have you recently made any changes to your PC; upgraded any software? The problem could be your driver and you may want to get the latest one, but it sounds like the firmware needs to be updated. A repair facility would be able to take care of that for you.

SOURCE: Why does my Brother printer

I have copied in the illustrated instructions for resolving printer status is Offline or Paused. (For Windows®) but if distorted please view here.

The printer status is Offline or Paused. (For Windows®)
Description:
To solve the problem, please see the following:

  • If the printer status is Offline:

Check that the printer is online using the following steps:

VERIFY THE BROTHER MACHINE IS POWERD ON AND THERE ARE NO ERRORS

    1. If the LCD screen is blank, then the Brother machine is not powerd on the machine to see if it wakes from sleep mode. If it does not, then verify that it is plugged into a working outlet and any power switches are turned to the ON position.
    2. Check the LCD screen for any error messages. An example would be "Paper Jam" or Ink/Toner Empty". If the LCD screen shows an error troubleshoot to clear the isssue indicated.

    CHECK THE PRINTER STATUS

NOTE : These steps or screens may differ depending on the operating system.
    1. For Windows® XP Users:
Click Start => Printers and Faxes

SOURCE: Brother HL-3040CN says it has

Hi,

I do understand that you have got the piece of paper removed from the printer. Even after this when its still showing the same error it's for sure that there is some more bits strangled inside. Please remove the toner and then check or clean the printer thoroughly. Also remove and straighten the papers that are there in the stack.

Hope you have the manual for the same to understand how to clean the printer. I am posting the manual for your reference:

Hi, my printer Brother MFC-9320CW enters in sleep mode every 30minutes. Any cloues how to clear the timing?

Hi,
try fixing the SLEEP menu.
Follow the steps I found:
Enter Menu and navigate to General Setup. To enter press OK. Use up or down arrow buttons to go to Ecology and again press OK. Enter Sleep Time menu and enter 0 if you don't want your brother to enter sleep mode. Press OK and exit printers menu.

My HP w2007 has started clicking to Monitor Going to Sleep and then going blank. I have never known how to wake it up so I have to turn the whole computer off and restart. HELP

Hey there, Normally simply pressing a random key on your keyboard or moving your mouse should wake it up, if it doesn't though I think the easiest way to solve this is to simply turn off the sleep mode after x amount of time.
If you have windows 7, press the start button and type in "power options", go ahead and open power options and there you will be able to set the time it takes before your PC shuts down, and you can also set it to never.

If you still wish to use this feature but just want to be able to it's a bit tricky and it won't even work for all PCs but if the keyboard waking isn't working, then it's probably because your pc does have this feature. When your PC is off, boot it up again and enter the bios by pressing F10 i believe it is for HP. And somewhere you should be able to set which devices are allowed to wake up your computer, all devices are probably disabled now, so go ahead and enable the keyboard to wake up your computer. Now save and exit, and the next time your PC goes to sleep mode you should be able to wake it up by pressing a key on your keyboard.

I hope I was able to assist. If I was, please don't forget to rate this solution.
