SOURCE: portable hard drive read only on mac

to format the drive so that it works on a mac, it needs to be formatted in FAT32 format rather than NTFS format on the pc. you can download free software called swissknife that lets you do this. make sure you back up everything on the drive before you format it in swissknife other wise all your data will be lost

If the drives' filing system is NTFS, then you will need to change it to either FAT32, if you would still like to use it on a Windows PC, or HFS+

yes you could simply format the harddrive in Fat32 using your macos that would be the best solution but don`t forget to backup your data by copy pasting the files on your mac or something else and after that to move them on the external hdd again to be available on the windows machine

Backup files from a PC and copy to a MAC?

Mac can read a PC formatted drive but a PC cannot read one formatted by mac. So format the drive on the PC wiping all information on it, copy to it. Move the files to the MAC and reformat.

Will windows 7 suport this hard drive

Hello,

Yes Windows 7 will support this drive but if it was formatted using either a Mac or an older version of windows it will tell you it needs to format the drive. If it was formatted with an older version of Windows simply dismiss the warning and do not allow it to format the drive. If it was formatted with a Mac, then you will need to reformat it before it will work on a PC but you will want to copy everything off the drive before formatting it as formatting will destroy the files currently saved on the drive.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

My laptop does not recognize my iomega hard drive

You need to format your drive to work with your Mac. The drive is shipped formatted as NTFS (Windows).
I'm going to assume that you are using Mac OS X 10.5 or later.
1. Open Disk Utility
2. Select Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
3. In the left hand column, click on the drive icon for the Iomega Hard Drive.
********Make sure you click on the high level icon, not the second level volume icon.********
4. Select the Partition tab.
5. Change Volume Scheme from Current to 1 Partition.
6. Select the format type from the Format drop-down menu.
Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (recommended) or Mac OS Extended.
7. Click on the Options button.
8. Select the type of partition you want to use:
GUID Partition Table - for boot ability on Intel-based Macs
Apple Partition Map - for boot ability on PowerPC-based Macs
Master Boot Record - if you will use the drive on a PC as well as your Mac. Use this option ONLY if you selected PC-DOS as the format type.
CAUTION! In most cases, the computer will fail to format the drive as a Mac OS Extended (HFS+) partition using Master Boot Record. For best results, always choose GUID Partition Table (Intel) or Apple Partition Map (PowerPC).
9. Click OK.
10. Click Apply (10.5-10.6) or Partition (10.4). The drive is ready to use when the format completes.

Iomga eGo drive data back-up for Vista need transfer to Windows 7

try to connect it to another computer that runs vista, reformatting is never a good thing. the portable hould be read on any other computer, but if you connect to another computer that have vista take it off and keep it on the other computer for a little (like someone elses computer) and put it back on to the computer with windows 7, reformat it and try to put our stuff back on then try again.
