It was taken off charge (orange light still showing) and suddenly won't switch on. If the charger is put in, the orange light comes on for a second then goes out. If it is plugged in, I can get it to turn on after about 5 - 6 attempts at switching it on/off. Without the charger it is dead. I do have another DS and have swapped the batteries and it plays fine in that one.

Yo need to have it serviced or exchanged if under warranty. Oh first, if the charger is not the problem try out a new battery. Also, can you power it on withoit the battery? Meaning will it work plugged into the charger and the battery taken out.
Your DS may have a problem reading the battery gauge, and the DS will only let the charger do its thing for a period of time. Then, if it is still connected, it may burst more charge in. This means that your DS is acting up, and your battery may have a rare (and not harmful to the DS) malfunction.
What is the orange charging light doing? If it is just flashing on, or only staying on or a minuet, that means you need a new battery. The orange light foes on when the battery has been charged to its maximum capacity. After each charge, the capacity is decreased. So if the orange light is on for only a short time, get a new battery.
First of all, your DS Lite is charging both ways.....with power on and without power on. You have for almost 99% sure a blown fuse F2 on the systemboard. If you can solder you can try to replace it with a new one but be adviced, it is tricky if you don't have the skills with soldering SMD components and it can send your DS lite to the trash. So my advice is find someone that repair DS Lites or order a fuse on eBay and try it yourself.
mmm not exactly because if you plug the charger back in it will go orange again, so my guess would be that the ds doesnt stay charged for a long while, you can charge the ds properly when it is shut off but it does needs to be charging at least 8 to 10, you want it to last longer, play a game till the power goes just dnt save anything incase the ds shuts down while saving, otherwise it can corrupt the game and possibly the ds
When you first get the DS it will have a bit if charge on it but only a few hours worth. When the DS charges it usally comes up with a orange/red ish light then that goes out about a few hours later when its charged. ad if you want to chek if it is charging correcly turn the DS on whilst it is charging and the little battery simble in the top right corner should show the battery carging.
