Question about Radio Shack Pro-97 Handheld Scanner

1 Answer

Scanner stopped working after hurricane Sandy. We re-initialized it, and entered our usual 10 frequencies... No response. Could the hurricane have shorted it out? Power surge? How do we find out if our channels are off-line due to the storm? We suspect some were knocked out... How/where can we look up that info? Thank you -

If the channels that were programmed are using a repeater to send out the signals the storm has most likely taken them all off the air, call around.

SOURCE: Motorola Trunking not working

If you are getting "cross over" on freqs, then you need to take it in and have it repaired by a pro. You have some bad parts inside and only with the proper electronic gear can you locate them. Plus it will need to be retuned.

SOURCE: edacs frequencies

Are you getting talkgroup ID's? If not, you're probably monitoring the EDACS system in conventional mode rather than trunking. When the scanner hears those beeps, it's supposed to go back to monitoring the control channel if you're in either trunking mode (search or scan). This also happens if the CC isn't coming in very well. If you're not in trunking mode, read the manual to find out more about programming and monitoring trunked systems. If you are in trunking mode and receiving ID's, the unit is probably malfunctioning.

while the weather channel is coming in hi LO (lockout) so that if its programmed into a regular scanning memory it will skip. If that dont work look for a lock button or keyboard lock and press that then scan.

SOURCE: Pro-164 scanner stops receiving when Motorola talk-ids are progra

I had to buy the Radio Shack USB cable 20-047 and install
the driver for it and then I downloaded a program named
"Win97" from the www.starrsoft.com website as listed
on page 21 of the Pro-164 manual. The cable costs
$34.99 and with tax you are looking at about $37.88.

The "Win97" software must be registered for it to work
after a 30-day free trial period. That's approx $25.00.

This is the ONLY WAY to go !! You put in everything
on the software GUI and then upload it to the PRO-164.
Works like a champ !!!!!!

I have a Uniden BC60XLT that I can not program because of the L/O and a HOLD being displayed, I enter the frequencies as instructed it gives me an "error" message - I paid a lot of money for this...

The ERROR message usually indicates that you're attempted to enter frequency that's out of the scanner's tuning range. Check the manual for the bands covered by your scanner.

L/O indicates a single channel lockout. To release it, press the L/O key while stopped on that channel.

If the scanner still will not program, try a RESET. To do this, power the scanner OFF. then power it on while holding in the 2, 9, and MANUAL keys. This action will erase all data previously programmed into the scanner and restore it to the original factory settings.

How to porgram bc140police scanning radio

First, you'll need a list of frequencies to program into the scanner. The BC140 memory is limited to just ten channels, so you'll need to select your coverage carefully. For a detailed database of active frequencies in your area, visit:
www.RadioReference.com

Once you have your frequency list:
- Power the scanner ON.
- Press the Manual key to stop scanning.
- Select the channel to program (1 through 10) by either entering it on the keyboard and then pressing Manual again, or by repeatedly pressing the Manual key to advance through the channels.
- Enter the frequency, including the decimal point (e.g., 156.055).
- Press Enter (E) to save the frequency in the scanner's memory.
- Press Manual to advance to the next channel and enter your next frequency.

When you finish programming, press the Scan key to start scanning.

If you enter an out of band frequency, one that is not covered by the scanner, the display will show E for error.

Your scanner is a basic 10-channel "oldie" and it's fairly simple to program and operate. To enter/program a known frequency:

- Power the scanner On
- Press MANUAL to stop scanning
- Press MANUAL repeatedly to advance to the channel that you wish to program
- Enter the desired frequency, including the decimal point (e.g., 156.225).
- Press E to enter the frequency into memory

Press the MANUAL key to advance through the channels, and press SCAN when you're ready to listen.

Scanner problems Its stays on Auto-Scann and buttons dont work

Resetting or initializing the scanner may clear your problem.

To RESET the scanner:

- Turn the power OFF, then turn it ON again.
- Insert a pointed object (paper clip end, ballpoint pen tip, etc.) into the RESET opening on the side of the scanner, then press and release the button inside the opening.

If the above doesn't clear the problem, try the more drastic INITIALIZE procedure. NOTE: this step will erase all data that you have programmed into the scanner and restore it to original factory settings. To INITIALIZE the unit:

- Turn the scanner OFF then ON again. The scanner briefly displays the DSP boot version, then "Welcome to Digital Trunking" displays.
- Press "0". The scanner displays "System Tests Select Test Exits if no Key Press"
- Press "1". The scanner displays "Factory Unit Erase Memory ENTER if Yes CL to Exit"
- Press ENTER. The scanner displays "Initializing Clr Main Mem V-Scan is OK Please Wait"
- Do not power the scanner OFF until INITIALIZE is complete. When the process is complete the scanner will display "M0000" on the top line and "Bank 0 Ch 0" on the bottom line.

If neither of the above steps works for scanner I recommend that you take it to your nearest Radio shack and arrange certified repairs.

LOCK ALL CHANNEL

If all channels are showing the lockout icon, and all are displaying the frequency 000.0000, you just need to program the scanner. Entering a frequency will remove the lockout.

If all are showing lockout and programmed frequencies, and the scanner will not function, you need to initialize it. This procedure will erase all data that you have programmed into the scanner and restore it to original factory settings.

- Turn the scanner OFF, then power it ON again. "Multi-system Trunking Scanner" shows on the display.
- Press 0
- Press 1
- Press ENT
"Initializing please stand by" shows on the display for about 5 seconds.

Do not turn the scanner OFF until initializing is complete and the display shows "M000" on the top line and "Bank 0 Ch 0" on the third line.

Manual for Bearcat Scanner BC 140 10 channel

I couldn't locate a manual for your oldie, but it's fairly simple to operate.

  1. Turn the scanner ON.
  2. Press "Manual" to stop scanning. Use the keyboard to choose the channel you want to enter your first frequency into. If you want channel 2, press the number 2 on the keyboard and then "Manual" again. If you want channel 12, press the 1 and then the 2 and then "Manual" again.
  3. Enter the desired frequency, including the decimal point. For instance, if the frequency is 555.789, enter 5, 5, 5 and then the dot button, then 7, 8 and 9. Then press "Enter" to complete the setup.
  4. Use the "Manual" button to move to the next channel to enter the next frequency. Continue this process until you have all frequencies entered.
  5. Complete your entries and then press "Scan." Set the squelch by turning the "Squelch" knob all the way up and backing off until you hear no static.
  6. Lock out a channel that is annoying you by pressing the "Lockout" button. If you want to listen to the channel again, simply select "Manual," find the channel by entering it on the keypad and then hit "Lockout" again

Need a free printable user manual for Bearcat scnner BC142XL

Its so easy to use you really don't need a manual for the Uniden BC142XL scanner.

Turn it on. Push the "MANUAL" button to stop it from scanning.

Push number 1, then push "MANUAL" again. This should leave you on channel one.

Using the keypad enter the frequency you want to monitor, then push "E." Press "REVIEW" at anytime to see what frequency is programmed there. If the review button flashes 000.0000 on the LED readout display, you might be entering an invalid frequency. Refer to the list of acceptable frequencies in the Frequency Range Bands below.

Push "MANUAL" to step to channel number two. Enter the frequency. Push "E." Push "MANUAL" to step to channel three. Repeat this process until all the (10) channels are full, or you've run out of frequencies to enter.

Push "SCAN" to start automatically scanning the frequencies. The
radio will stop when it hears someone talking, and resume scanning two seconds after the conversation has stopped.

Frequency Range Bands:

20 to 29.7 MHz (10 Meter "Ham" Band)
29.7 to 50 MHz (VHF Low Band)
50 to 54 MHz (6 Meter Amateur Band)
136 to 144 MHz (Military Land Mobile)
144 to 148 MHz (2 Meter "Ham" Band)
406 to 420 MHz (Federal Government Land Mobile)
420 to 450 MHz (70cm "Ham" Band)
450 to 470 MHz (UHF Standard Band)
470 to 512 MHz (UHF "T" Band

If this helps, please take a moment to give us a rating -- and a rating of "very helpful" would be greatly appreciated.

Need to know how to put codes in

If your scanner is the BC350C (the section you posted in), here's a link to the owner's manual which will give you detailed programming information:

http://www.uniden.com/pdf/BC350Com.pdf

If you have a different model Bearcat scanner, try:

1. Push MANUAL to stop scanning and advance to the channel that you want to program.

2. Enter the desired frequency, including the decimal point (e.g., 156.015).

3. Press E or ENTER to set the frequency.

4. Repeat the process, starting with 1 above to select the channel.

NOTE: With some Bearcat scanners you may need to press the E or ENTER key before entering your frequency.

These are general steps that work on most recent Bearcat models. If they don't work on yours, try different variations. You can also check Uniden.com -- they may have an online manual that you can download and print.
