Question about Samsung LN40A450 LCD TV

SAMSUNG 46" LCD : How do you determine which board is bad? I know what I'm looking at and for. I'm not seeing any bulging bulbs / bad caps / burnt or blown areas on the board. Which board do I re-order?

Hello Jon,

Before you start ordering and swapping parts check with Samsung, that model is covered under the terms of the class action lawsuit settlement over bad power supply boards. The power supply boards cause the exact symptoms that you are having. They should repair the unit free of charge for parts and labor. Here is additional information on the settlement along with contact information.

The set is under a year old and is under warranty. The LVDS cable inside these sets have a history of coming loose. The problem could be the panel. Either way, the set is the problem and needs to be looked at. This set is worked on in the home and does not need to be taken to a shop, so, you can still use it. Contact Samsung at: 1-800-SAMSUNG Hope this helps.

Replacing the capacitors would be a good start. Replace all the ones with the same capacitance and voltage rating even if they do not look bulge.
Let me know if you require further assistance.

SOURCE: audios fine but picture is black

Hello taasmost9, This problem indicates an issue with the inverter which operates the backlight. It appears that your inverter is malfunctioning. If you have a background in electronics, it is possible for you to repair this yourself if not you will do more damage then good so I would like to suggest that if you do not have a background in electronics that you have a qualified TV technician work on and repair this problem. If you do have a background in electronics you will need to measure the voltages at the inverter and determine that power id present at the inverter's input and at the output to the backlight. You will need a schematic and a multimeter for this task. After finding the component you have a choice of replacing the component or replacing the entire inverter module (this is up to you depending on the cost of each procedure). I hope this helps, Thank you, Shuttle83 http://www.electron-age-technologies-llc.com

SOURCE: Samsung 46" LCD LN46B650 started showing vertical

had a very similar situation with my Phillips 42 in. LCD TV.

Here was my Problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened it up( Warranty was Expired) and found several faulty capacitors on the PSB. Its pretty common. Major Electronic companies were sold faulty capacitors that fail in 2-5 years instead of 10-20 due to a lack of preservatives. It wouldn't surprise me if you have the same problem. TV will work fine for a few years and then just fail completely or slowly deteriorate.

Here are the solutions
1. Have it Repaired
2. Check for faulty caps and if you find some(budged or leaking) you know you have located a problem
Remove the board and replace the whole thing.
3. If you have some soldering skills you can replace the faulty caps.
Caps are very inexpensive, under a dollar in most cases. I replaced 4 for about $5.00

Hope this Helps.
Good Luck

The 6V difference would matter depending on the location of the capacitor. If there is no voltage regulator circuit and if its in the circuit that goes into the main A/V board then I would thing that it has damaged if not fried some components into the A/V circuit. If you can get me a picture of the circuit where the caps are I can have a look and tell you if its due to that.

I hear sound no picture

First, look at the screen in darkened room to see if you can see any slight glow from the screen, if it does, then the problem can be the T-CON (not getting the 12vdc) or the main logic board not feeding the signals to the T-CON board.
if not, next place to check will be the power supply module, make sure it has 24vdc which is required by the backlight inverter to work, the reason for not having 24vdc can be from bad DC filter caps (leaking/bulging top, high ESR) or short circuits in the inverter board which will cause the 24vdc supply to go into shutdown mode, so you may have to disconnect the power cable that feed the inverter board to see if the 24vdc will work without the inverter board hookup, you will need to apply about 3~4 amp of load to the 24vdc to make sure it can handle that. There are fuses on the backlight inverter boards also. So there is some troubleshooting you will have to do to find out the causes of the problem you are having.

You likely have a power supply problem. If you can take the back off of the set and trace the AC cord to the power supply look for bulged capacitors on the board. Capacitors are cylinder shaped components standing upright and the bad one will have a bulge or domed at their top instead of flat. If you see any this way you could replace them by soldering in some with equal value of microfarads and voltage or match the part number on ebay (Model search on ebay) and replace the whole module if you can't solder. The module unscrews and unplugs.

My TV constantl clicks on and off. Meaning the blue light comes on and goes off and the TV never boots up all the way to come on to watch TV?

I am having the same issue with mine, I do know that it is either the backlight inverter board that is bad or the power supply board. In my research and repairing tv's I have come to find out more than likely it is the power supply board. Try and take apart the back of the tv and see if you can see anything noticeable that is wrong, such as the norm of bulging capacitors. Usually its a great first step in repairing your own ps board.

Most likely you have bulged capacitors on the power supply board. If your handy with a soldering iron it will probably cost you about $10.00 in parts. If the caps are bulged, you will know by the tops of them will be bulged.
