Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 160GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

I have a Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 160GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive. It uses a split USB connector with one being power & data and the other being power only. It worked once on a co-workers laptop and has not worked since. I have plugged it in to several different computers, into known good usb ports and there is absolutely no response from either computer. There is a led on the hdd which blinks once. If I leave it plugged in and come back later, this led is on continous. I am not concerned about salvaging the contents, we have other copies. I just want to be able to use the drive. By the way, you can hear the hum of the platter(s) spinning and on first plugging it in you can hear some head activity. I have looked in the device manager as well as in disk management on each different computer and ther is no sign of this drive/ Any ideas??

I reinstalled Vista Ultimate (without formating) yesterday and without the drive plugged-in the usb port, restart computer this morning, plug in the drive, no way to get the drive recognized. Vista is asking for the driver and the manufacturer does not provide one... Until then, I thought I had the best usb smart key out there...

First let's try going into disk management and see if we can see your maxtor drive. Plug it in then right click on my computer. From there click on manage and then select disk management.
This will give you a list of your drives. If the Maxtor is there, what is the status? Can you right click on it and activate it? If you don't see the drive then let's try the next step.
If you go into your device manager and select your Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Right click on your on the USB Universal Host controller and select uninstall. This will uninstall the USB Driver, but don't worry, oncfe you have uninstalled all the controllers, you will reboot the machine and then Windows will come back and reinstall all the usb controllers. Once this is complete then plug the drive back in and see if you still get the same issue. If none of that works....
Download a linux bootcd called SLAX http://www.slax.org/get_slax.php?download=iso
use nero to burn the iso to a cd and boot from it. Once you're in there, you SHOULD be able to recognize or at least see the drive. If you can then format the ****** from Slax. Once that's complete, you should be able to see it as a raw drive in Windows and then you can format it using explorer or a command prompt.

Let me know how this goes.

If it still has a valid warranty, exercise the warranty to get a free replacement.

Otherwise, open the enclosure, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, and connect the disk-drive as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the adapter was the problem.

Hmmm What software do you need?
You should not need software to run the HDD. Just plug it in.
You can get the One Touch software from Seagate (who no own Maxtor) See

Broke external hard drive

It depends on how badly bent it is. If you're stable with your hands, and can use a small nail to pry the deformed peice straight, do so carefully. If however you absolutely need to save the data on the drive and can't afford to have the bent peice fully break off, take it to your local computer repair store and they should be able to replace the connection.
