Can't install WINxp

Sir,
I am trying to install WINXP on my system having ASUS P 4B M motherboard. I have a SIS6215 display card on the motherboard, 128mb RAM & 40 Gb HDD.
On booting the system by WINxp CD it gives F6 option then F2 option and then it gives an error message:

AN UNEXPECTED ERROR (1414483778) OCCURRED AT LINE 1773 IN D:\XPSPRTM\BASE\BOOT\SETUP\ARCDISP.C.

Press any key to continue…….

When I press any key, the system restarts and again same thing happens after the reboot.

I would be thankful if you can resolve it,

Thanks

Before i go onto the solution mate , I would strongly not recommend running Windows XP on your current specification anyway , as it would take forever to load and may cause drastic issues with your current configuration.

128mb is nowhere near enough memory to run Xp. 256mb is slow , 512mb is just about enough - you need 1gb or more to get a fast xp system, or 512mb at least. Your motherboard supports whopping 3gb so you should really upgrade from 128mb!

Looking online for memory , you need PC133 SDRAM , you can have a maximum of 3 sticks with 1gb per stick as there ios 3 slots on your board. Do you know how many slots are used?

128mb might be 1x128mb or 2x64mb

A quick search brings up very cheap prices , you can get a 512mb stick for $10!
http://www.trademoon.com/Product57603.aspx

Get 2 or 3 these :D

Id also personally recommend a new display card , even if its not a top of the range one , maybe one with 128mb or 256mb memory

I have this card , very good for most things:-

Nvidia Geforce 6200 - http://www.refbuy.com/product_info.php?products_id=38070

128mb card is $27.50 , 256mb is probably about $40-$45

Now we get onto the problem , assuming you have a nice fast system :D

This error message is quite common and funnily enough usually relates to dodgy memory , so theres another excuse to go and upgrade it!

Also might be a dodgy hard drive , go to the hard drives manufacturer website , all manufacturers have a diagnostic utility that you can run. If it brings up errors etc and it cant fix them , maybe its time for a new drive. 40gb is hardly anything nowadays and you can get 120gb drives for around $80

Also , to Test the memory download and run memtest86 , put it on a floppy or cd and boot the computer off it (www.memtest86.com) Leave for an extended period of time, like overnight (unless you see errors right away).

Hi,

From your description, it seems similar to the problem pointed out my Microsoft.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q316400&

This seems that there is a possible RAM failure, that makes your installation frustrating.

  1. Try replacing the memory module in your system.
  2. It will be nice if you can get a 512MB DDR400 memory for the PC.
  3. 128MB is a little too less for Windows XP
Just my 2 cents worth.

Hope this helps.

Try installing from another copy. It sounds like the file is corrupt. Get a CD from someone, but use your own product key (this is not illegal, as you are using the product key you bought) Try installing it. It ought to work now!

I have problem in asus A8V-vm motherboard in that hard disk is not detected in BIOS but Win-XP is working properly and when I tries to install new windows XP it shows an error that hard disk cannot be...

Asus A8V-VM Motherboard coming with SATA RAID option, thats why you could not see the detected HDD in system BIOS. But you can see the the detected HDD in RAID BIOS. You can enter to RAID BIOS that will pop up after system BIOS. If you are using old version of WinXP it will not detect the RAID controller of you motherboard. Thats why you cannot able to install WinXP. While you booting from WinXP CD press F6 key when the WinXP installer prompted for third party driver. Copy the RAID driver provider in driver CD to a Floppy Disk (INF file) and insert it, hit enter to continue the installation. If you are using WinXP Service pack 2 or higher you do not need this step it will automatically detect the HDD.
