By design, the iPod, iPhone and iPad will sync iTunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL iTunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you replaced your computer, or hard drive, your phone will see this as a "new" computer. The iTunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to your phone or music ripped on your own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from your phone using third party software, before you do anything else, as Apple makes no provision to do so:

Use this:

http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php

Past iTunes, App store, & iBookstore content can be re-downloaded. Read here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:

1. Disable auto sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected under iTunes>Preferences>Devices(under Edit menu if using Windows).

2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in the supported applications on your computer(iCal & Address Book on a Mac, Windows Address Book or Outlook if using Windows). These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.

3. Connect your phone, iTunes running, do not sync at this point.

4. Store>Authorize this computer.

5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your iTunes library).

6. Right click your phone in the left device pane & select "Reset warnings".

7. Right click again and select "Backup".

8. Right click again & select "Restore from Backup", select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.

9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your iTunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select "Merge".

Your phone should look just like it did when you started, with no data loss.

How to configure iPods?

<p>An iPod can be configured to synchronize with a version of iTunes manually or automatically. When the iPod sync automatically, you can store large amounts of files on the device in a single step. The unit certainly cannot be synced with one iTunes library at a time, however. An iPod that syncs with iTunes manually can be used with many different computers, but the management of content for the iPod in particular is longer than when dealing with an iPod that syncs automatically. <br /> <p><br /> <p>1. Connect the iPod to the computer that you are going to configure the iPod USB cable. <br /> <p><br /> <p>2. Open iTunes. <br /> <p><br /> <p>3. Click the name of the iPod or the word "iPod" found under the "Devices" option in the left column of iTunes. <br /> <p><br /> <p>4. Click on the "Summary" tab located in the center of the top of the iTunes window. <br /> <p><br /> <p>5. Click the box found the left of the "manually manage music and videos." Win or lose the case, or a check, depending on the current settings of the iPod. If the box is a tick, the iPod changed the setting to "manual sync," meaning that the iPod can be synchronized with multiple computers files are deleted from the device. If a tick is removed, the iPod has changed the setting to "sync automatically" and warns iTunes, explained that all current files on the device removed and replaced with files in your iTunes library on your computer. Click "OK" to continue. <br /> <p><br /> <p>6. Click "Apply" at the bottom of iTunes to complete the setup of the iPod. <br />

All I want to do is be able to choose what goes from my Itunes on my computer onto my Ipod. Can I do this without Cosmi? I have Windows 7 -- is this too new?

You can do this by turning off Automatic Syncing.
  1. Open iTunes.
  2. Plug your iPod into the PC
  3. Select your device in iTunes
  4. In the Summary screen, tick "Manually manage music and videos"
Now your iPod no longer syncs all the music on your iTunes.

I cannot sync my ipod and i need to reset the security lock on, can somebody please tell me how ot do this,

There are really two ways to unlock your locked ipod if you forget the code.

1. First, connect your iPod to the first computer it was synced with or the computer set as the primary one in iTunes. Open the iTunes and then disconnect your iPod from the computer, and it should no longer be locked.

2. Restore your ipod, CAUTION! this will erase all of your songs and personal data.

1. Try another USB cord or USB cable. 2. Restrart your computer for a try.
3. Reset or restore your iPod for a try, this way can fix many general iPod problems. If you don't know how to do that, you may refer to this iPod tips

4. Download and install the latest version fo iTunes for a try.
5. You may try this iPod transfer, it's a nice iTunes alternative that can help you upload music and video to iPod, I always use it to sync my iPod when my iTunes can't recognize my iPod, it's easy to use and works pretty well

I have downloaded music in my music drive on the comp. When I transfer the music to my ipod it shows in itune library that it is there but when I disconnect ipod there is no music to listen to.

you need to make sure all the songs in your library are selected by viewing the songs in LIST view, and check mark the songs you want to sync with your ipod.
you can also unsync your ipod and it will remove all the songs from your ipod. Now close Itunes and re-launch it, sync your ipod again.

IPod won't sync with existing iTunes

Hi,
Just connect it to your computer and sync it with your iTunes library. If that doesn't work, try 'restoring' the iPod and reloading your music from your library. Hope that helps.

Music no longer on ipod

What youve probably done is unselected the playlists that was previously on your ipod so you could sync the new playlists. By doing this the ipod would automatically delete the old songs off your ipod and then sync the new ones. I'm guessing youve managed to upload new songs onto your ipod?

It could also be your using a different computer and by syncing the ipod to a new computer it would automatically delete previous playlists.

I suggest using a programme called sharepod where you dont need to use itunes and is much more simpler. The link is below.

sharepod
