Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

NO output either HD or normal tvs (not on/off botton hold prob)

I already know about the holding the on/off button for 5 secs to change the output between HD and normal. i have tried this method before and it always work but now its just a black screen. I have tried it on both HD tv (using HDMI cable) and normal (using component) held the on/off button for 5 secs, it beeps then the screen flickers then...nothing.

tried inserting a disc in and i noticed theres a loading icon on the top right hand corner of screen...so that tells me that the input does work but then it goes black again, No main menu screen or anything

man i just thought it was some sort of system setting I accidentally press "disable" on. Your solution sounds by far most logical out of all i read on similar problems and definately will look in to, but before i go spend some BONES on a new HDD drive how sure are you that this is problem is related to corrupted system files.

by the way...how do you reformat the corrupted drive on the PC if your solution is true.

Hi, The fact that you are getting a load icon when you put a disc in makes me think you have corrupted system files. If you have a spare 2.5 SATA drive you could put it into the PS3 and let it auto-format it, see if that gets the menu back for you. If it does then your current drive probably needs to be reformatted on a PC and then re-inserted into your PS3.
You'll lose your save games (unlesss you can back the drive up on the PC).

Hi, I don't know for sure that it is corrupted system files, but the fact that you are getting a load icon leads me to believe that the output is working, and the fact that it comes up when a disk is inserted would point to the BD drive working (or at least working enough to detect a disc).

    Before you buy a new HD you might want to try restoring system files from the recovery menu. You should be able to do this without loosing any save game files. Follow these instructions;

The current version of the ps3 firmware has a “recovery console”.
    You access it by

    1. Start with having the system in standby (redlight is on)

    2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.

    3. Press and hold the power button again and keep holding, it will beep as it turns on and then it will double beep. When you hear the double beeps immediately take your finger off the power button (if your system turns off before you get a double beep just try again and hold the button, it should double beep the 2nd time you try)

    4. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button

You will now have a screen with these options

    1. Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
    2. Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
CHOOSE THIS ONE 3.Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
    4. Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
    5. Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
    6. System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT CHOOSE THE WRONG OPTION HERE OR YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR DATA. The one that fixed my blu-ray drive is option 3: RESTORE FILE SYSTEM

I REPEAT CHOOSE RESTORE FILE SYSTEM

After this, it is going to restart and bring up a screen reading something like “you have Corrupted System Data. Your PS will now replace this data” Then you choose continue and that should be it.

    Here is a video showing how to get to the recovery menu too;
    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_2YnGGUOJk...

If the Restore File System doesn't work you can try the Restore PS3 System option, but this will wipe al your saved data, so only use as a last resort.

If none of these work then i would remove the HD and hook it up to a PC and format it. It doesn't matter what you format it with as the PS3 will reformat it to it's own specifications when you put it back in. This is pretty much the same option as Restore PS3 System from the recovery menu, but by formatting it first you should have ensured any corrupted sectors on the disk have been found and recovered or marked as bad so that they wont ne used in future.

Sorry for the very long post, I just wanted to offer you some options before you spend any money on a disk.

If you are changing cables or cannot see an image on the screen, you may need to reset the video output to default settings. To reset the video output:
  1. While the PS3 system is in standby mode (red light on the front of the system), hold down the touch-sensitive On/Off button on the front of the system until the PS3 beeps a second time (approximately 5 seconds), then release it.
  2. The PS3 will power up, the Video Output Settings will automatically reset to the standard resolution (or detect the current display output settings of your TV/monitor).

My ps3 will work on hd tvs with the hd cable but will not work on normal tv with the scart cable

You will need to reset the video settings:

Press and hold the power button until the unit shuts off. After 2 seconds, repeat. You may hear 2 beeps but continue to hold the button until it shuts off. This will reset the video settings and you will be back to AV. You will need to set up your new video settings using the video settings tool.

DO YOU FIX PS3s... I have tryed everything i can think of incloding different cables HD & normal, different TVs HD & normal Also holding down the power button and waiting for the beeps. But nothing...

  1. Make sure the HDMI cable is connected to the HDMI OUT port on the back of the PLAYSTATION 3 system. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI Input port of the TV or display monitor.
  2. While the PLAYSTATION 3 system is in standby mode (red light on the front of the system), hold down the touch-sensitive power button on the front of the system until the system goes into standby mode again . (So the light cycle would go from: red light --> green light --> then back to red light). This will ensure that you have held down the power button long enough to reset the Video Output Settings.
  3. Turn on the PLAYSTATION 3 system and once the system finishes powering up, the Video Output Settings will automatically reset to the standard resolution (or detect the current display output settings of your TV/monitor).

SAFE MODE

Have a look at this, it may help.

It POWERS ON BUT HAS NO PICTURE,

Okay, I am now going through all the unsolved problems for which previously I had the same problems and now posting our solution. First, if you have no pic due to swiching of the cables (ie, cable av, hdmi) WHENEVER you switch your cable output, the ps3 also switches it's output. Make sure when there is no picture due to this problem to turn off the game console, then turn on, hold down the power button for approx. 5 SECs, there will be a BEEP. Let go of power button, the ps3 has then switched back to the output it is currently plugged in and will work. (ALSO sometimes you have to have ONLY the ps3 and tv hooked up) Hope this helped. I know how stressful this can be!
