The upper thread becomes jammed inside the lower track of the shuttle. What can I do?

Try a brand new needle. Change thread. Make sure the needle is installed facing the correct direction and is pushed all the way up. The upper tension may be too loose.

Short of that, could be the machine's timing is off.

How would I secure the hook and race so they don't move after they're clipped in?

Your repairman is what's wrong! The bobbin case I believe is what you are talking about. (I hope you didn't remove the race)
1. Anyway the bobbin case has to be snug so it doesn't move clockwise or counter clockwise. If it moves the needle will crash . If your machine is an older one the truth is the same.
2. The bobbin case cannot be allowed to spin. See adjustment!
3. Before you start sewing again clean the feed dog real good.
4. Before you put the bobbin in the bobbin case (on top of race) put a drop of oil on the race.
5. Replace the needle. This is important.
If you still have a problem your machine probably needs to be timed due to the needle crashing before.

How do I reassemble drop-in bobbin case for Brothers XL 2600 free arm?

Do you have some pictures of the area involved. I know how to put these things back but I can't think how to explain it to you.. pics might help me show you.

Brother has an outstanding service department, and if you don't have a manual, they should have one. Should have a pic of how it goes together.

How to fix bobbin timing?

Check to see the bobbin case is in fully, and the shuttle race cover is secure. Also make sure the needle is not larger than specified for the machine (many machines can't cope with size 18 or 19 needles!) Also check to see if the needle is of the right needle system (not a serger needle!), and fully up in the needle clamp. The needle package should show one of these needle systems: HAx1, 130R, 130/705H, 15x1, SY 2020.

The needle shaft wont go up or down when I step on the foot pedal and I cannot turn the wheel to try to do it manually.

If you can not turn the handwheel at all there is a bind in the machine somewere. The most comon place that this will happen is in the hook/bobbin/race area. Follow these steps and it may fix your problem.
Remove needle and bobbin case.
We need to open the race and remove the hook. (The race is the black round part that the bobbin goes inside.)
On the left part of the race there is a small steel clip that you push to the left and it should fall open.
Then remove the hook, it may have fallen out alreay. (It is just right behind the race.)
Clean out that area and make sure there is no broken needle/lint/ ect.
Test to see if handwheel is moving freely with the parts out.
If so lubricate the hook and put it all back together. Should be ready to sew.
Hook needs to be lubricated every 2-3 bobbins

If this does not fix it probably will need to take it in for repair.
Also check to make sure your bobbin winder is not on (I dont think that is it but ill mention it).
Hope this helps

My needle hits metal and my bobbin thread jams

does the hook assembly rotate when you move the hand wheel. If no, then your machine's lower gears are shot.

My MC9000 is jamming when I go to sew (normal sewing/default sett

You may have to replace the bobbin race. It is the round compartment (Black) that the bobbin sits in. If the needle has hit the race because of misthreading, it may have displaced it and put a hole in the race. Not very expensive to fix... want to say somewhere around $30

Putting bobbin back

you need to set the hook (1/2 moon shaped object) in first. That sits inside the circle. The round race sets in over top of the hook, a lot of times there is a pin or slot that has to match up on the race. Then slide the little arms back into place and you are all set.

My brother PE-400 sewing quit sewing

The "race" on your machine needs adjusting. Remove the bobbin cover, bobbin, & case. What you have left is the race, it moves when you turn the large wheel on the top right of machine. The needle also moves up and down. There is a hook on the race that catches the needle thread. Try moving the race to the line up with the needle. It may take a couple of trys but it should do the trick. Also clean any threads that may be caught on or arround the race. Hope this helps!

My Janome Harmony 8048 sewing machine came up with an E1 error. My manual says that this means that the machine is out of order. I've noticed that if the needle is lowered and then turned on, it will...

make sure the bobbin winder on the top of the machine is all the way to the left. otherwise the machine thinks you are trying to wind a bobbin and sew at the same time.
