Can't detect an external Hard drive (Maxtor 1TB)

I've been using the External hard drive (maxtor 1TB) for about 3 weeks without a hitch and now all of a sudden, my computer (laptop) can't detect the Hard drive. Any suggestions please?

I don't know about the port (or how to look it up, sorry!) but the hard drive shows up in the "device manager" with a yellow code on it (Code 10). And it also shows up in the "safely remove window".

But the damn thing works on every other computer I have connected it to. Is it my computer acting up?

Hey guys it's me with the Maxtor 1tb again. Seriously I almost regret buying the damn Hard drive. Too much trouble for a 150 Dollar gadget.

The new problem is that the hard drive shows that it's full of data in the properties tab, yet when I try to open up the various folders, it shows me empty folders.

    SOMEBODY HELP me AGAIN please.

The yellow question mark means that the device is not working .Try reinstalling it after deleting all of the software. If it is working on all the other computers their is nothing wrong with the hd. It has to be the link (software or hardware) to this on.

See if it is listed under the hardware and if the port is also still listed.

Go to your admin tools and go to the device manager and look into the storage section and if you "see" your 1TB maxtor drive right click and make sure its active/enabled (sorry if my terminology is off im going of memory) i bought one and had some issues getting my PC's to recognize it till i did that and viola it worked fine (after a 3 hour format) but i thought i had one of the wonderous D.O.A HD's from maxtor (lots of bad reviews out ther right now)

Im going to assume your on XP for these instructions. other wise you still need to do the same thing.

right click the my computer desktop or the start menu. go down to properties. open the hardware tab. open the device manager. Scroll down to it, remove the driver, just delete the whole entry. unplug the hard drive, then plug it in again. See if that works.

hope this will fixya....

im sorry, but it sounds like the data is corrupt. i actually just had that problem. (luckely i run a dual boot) i had to open in windows 7 and copy the files to another drive, than back in XP. i think you may have gotten a problem shutting down while accessing the folder... Their are many ways to go about this.... IF you can back up the files somewhere. (or try it on another computer) download any live linux CD. Freespire will work easily someothers require a little more knowhow.

downloada free spire and boot into it. you should be able to access the files through the operating systeme you boot into (go to live cd NOT INSTALL) then move files off that drive.

go back to windows format the usb drive and then put the files back on.

Good luck. i hope you can work that out

Ouch. im sorry to hear that. i am getting over the same problem now. The drive was corrupted somehow. maybe file transfer rwas happening when it shut down.... or who knows it could be many things.

have you tried putting it in another computer WITHOUT XP! like vista? or the newwe wwindows 7 beta...?
ok well if that works copy the files to the other computer than format the drive and put the files back on.
    if that doesnt work here:

it wont be a short quick fix, but it will work.

you are going to need to be able to swap files to another hard drive... another external or the internal in the computer. downloada freespire (its linux, and should work great for what your doing)
http://linux-ds.unidu.hr/freespire/frees... thats an iso file. you will need to burn it to a CD. the software you use needs to be able to burn iso's it will say either burn iso to disk or burn an image to disk.
ok so do that. (use cheetah burner if you need one its got a free trial)

ok. put the disk in your CD drive and boot into the CD (you may have to go into the bios and set your CD drive to first boot priority. (get to bios by pressing either esc, or delete repeadedly when the computers starting up) boot into the CD boot into "Live mode" nothing else. no install and no
gparted. Ok now when it starts up this should look fimiliar, like windows just different. You should plug in the usb drive when the computer has booted. it should show up on the desktop. Transfer those files you want to your desktops hard drive (should also be on the desktop) after you have copied the files take out the cd boot back into windows. format your USB drive, and go ahead and use it. put those files on and you will be good to go.

Hi there i hav ea maxtor onetouch 4 mini 120 gb.

Remove the hard drive from the Maxtor case, purchase an USB hard drive adapter case, and install the hard drive inside this case. Then you can connect this to the computer's USB port and if the hard drive is OK then this computer will detect it as an external USB hard drive, then you can open the folders and files and back them up.

Sorry, Maxtor prog on poota is currupted. Have you recently downloaded programmes? When updating, some progs have a nasty side-effct of hitting some other programmes, not all the time, just your important ones?

You will have to uninstall and reinstall Maxtor prog, Not sure there might be a repair facility, not sure but it worth a try before uninstalling all.

MY external hard disk maxtor is not detected

Is this a new Maxtor external drive? It came with a CD. Run the utility.

If there is no data on it that you want to save, you can also blow away the partition and format it:
Right-click [My Computer]
[Manage]
[Disk Management]
Find your external Maxtor Disk inthe list and / or graph
Right-click on the disk and select either "Format" or "Delete Partition"
(try format first) Use "NTFS quick format"

If you delete the partition, then "Create Partition" and then format.
You can assign a drive letter or accept whatever it assignes (probably Drive D)
*done*

Maxtor Basics external portable hard drive not getting detected

Right Click on My Computer, click on Manage, go to Disk Managment, if the drive is available you will see it there. Check to see if it has a drive letter assigned to it, if not right click on it and choose Change Drive letters. Make sure you are on the external drive though, you don't want to change your C drive accidentally. It should pop up in My Computer.

option 01. try the unit on another windows pc. if its the same. i am afraid you might have an issue with the device.

option 2 . you could remover the **** from the enclosure & fix it directly to the pc so that you can retrive the data. however this will have an impact on your warranty
