You probably have a bad inverter or backlight in the display. The inverter is what provides power for the light, and it's usually what goes bad. Replacements for most brands are available online from a number of sources. A Google search will usually turn up several, as well as detailed steps to change it if yours is a common brand. A computer service shop could give an estimate if you're not comfortable doing the repair yourself.
If the backlight itself is bad, that's much harder to change since it's built into the display panel. It's easiest to replace the display, but that can be a costly part. Most servicers won't try replacing the backlight because of the time involved. Again, get an estimate and then decide whether to fix it or replace it.
