Hello the fault could be:

A bad spark plug.
Ignition coil
Burned valve.
A injector coil.
Blocked fuel filter
Low compression on that cylinder.
Try make a compression test on that cylinder
The reading must be between 9 and 11 bar.

This is not a homejob let a qualified do the fault finding.
Because the engine is to expensive. It will cost you big time if something goes wrong.

Good luck

You can try and activate the air compressor at the pump relay, but if you have a serious leak that will not work.

Check all wires around your replacement piece to insure that nothing came loose or is grounding out, it may have also overloaded a fuse if one wire is touching another, so maybe check fuses if nothing else.

2002 s55 amg doesnt have full power and back fires occaisionally. one catilyc converter get very hot fast.

the reason that the catylitic converter is hot is because of a rich condition in the engine, one cylinder is not firing. This is most likely the cause of the back fire that you are having. It may be related to the tapping sound if it is a valve that is bend or broken.
