Question about Heating & Cooling

Open Question

Janitrol model A36-15 isn't switching on the inside heater when needed?

The outside heat pump works fine, but when it get to cold outside for the heat pump, the inside unit should turn on and it doesn't. Can you please give me some ideas and what to check. I would think it's a relay issue, but I need instructions on how to check this. I do own a electrical test kit.

Start with the simplest first it,s not fun but it's necessary EVERY TIME. Clean your evaporator and condenser coil, change your air filter. Getting to the evap. coil is often a real headache and a result doesn't get done often. When its clogged as you probably know the refrigerant can't absorb heat at the coil so it tries to absorb heat on the way to the compressor freezing the hot gas line the safety circuits that protect the heat pump compressor from getting liquid refrigerant back to the compressor almost immediately will take the compressor of line (looking somewhat like a defrost cycle). I hope this helps it's a tough repair GL!

i would get someone to check your refrigerant levels have you ever had the evaporator coil flushed and cleaned? proper refrigerant levels and proper airflow across coils are extremley important not to scare you but 18 yrs is a long time on a heat pump 9-12 years is the point where they really loose there efficiency going for a newer one would probably cut your operating cost in half if not more depending where you live there are a lot of people not familiar with heat pumps so i suggest finding a company that specializes in them to service your unit

You need to take the cover off and you should see some aluminum fins like whats on the outside unit the blower will either blow across them or pull air accross them. Clean them with a wire brush and soapy water if you dont have coil cleaner which can be purchased at hardware stores

I have a Lennex heat pump unit which was installed in 2008. Our area (Savannah, GA) has experienced some abnormal cold temps lately. Yesterday, I noticed the outside of the unit had frost on the unit. ...

Heat pumps are the same as an A/C unit only it works in reverse. Instead of blowing cold air inside and hot air outside it blows hot air inside and cold air outside. The heat being blown inside is extracted form the cold air outside. Its called Latent heat Latin for hidden. Believe it or not even though its 20 degrees outside there is still heat in the air. Example if you want to drop the temperature of a freezer from 20 to 10 degrees you have to remove heat .I know your getting unusal weather and that is the problem. Heat pumps can only work no lower then around 20 degrees outside.Heat pumps are never used above the freeze line. With your unusal temperatures thats basically where you are now. Ride it out. When your temps rise a little your be fine. Im in Chicago.

I have a Janitrol outside Package unit, Not sure of the year, the trailer is a 97 or 98, not sure and the problem is that when it gets colder outside, the unit does not blow hot air, it gets colder inside...

Sounds like uninsulated exposed duct work. You can insulate the duct work and check to see that your cold air return is pulling air from inside the trailer not from an outside source. If the problem is not with the duct work try setting the high and low limits for the fan up slightly. Normal settings are roughly around 150 on the high and 125 on the low.

My outside a/c condensing unit's fan runs, but inside vent air is not cold. compresser may not be running. inside vent air was cold last week. Janitrol ckj361ab is model # of outside unit.

Start the unit and go outside to see if the insulated pipe is sweating or cold, hot air should be discharging from top of outside unit. Since the breaker is not tripping, my best guess is the compressor is not operating. You might have to replace the capacitor.

If you can hear the compressor operating, then most
likely needs refrigerant

Energy Knight heat pump refuses to blow!

Does this problem happen when the temperature is below 30 degrees? When it gets about that cold outside, the air outside is too cold for the heat pump to "steal" heat from. On the thermostat you'll find a switch labeled aux or emergency heat. Turning this switch on will operate a traditional coil heater inside the system, providing you with heat. The only downfall to this is that it uses more energy to heat this way. Try turning the fan switch from "auto" to "on". If the fan comes on, then we can rule that out. If the aux heat switch is NOT on, set the thermostat such that the system will try to heat. If the outside unit is running, the problem is either it being too cold like I said earlier, or there's a problem with the heat pump's mechanical system that needs to be serviced by a professional. If the outside unit doesn't run but it should be, check it's breakers at the panel, the breaker inside the electrical box that feeds it, and look to see if there's a reset button on the unit itself. Finally, check the air handler (part of the system inside with the fan in it) to see if there's any circuit breakers or fuses on this unit. Make sure they're not tripped/blown. If none of this helps, you definitely want to get a pro to work on your system.

Our janitrol heat pump is freezing. there is considerable buildup of ice inside the pump itself on the coil. the fan still spins and still heats the interior of the home

Switch the thermostat from heat to Aux. or emergency heat till the outside unit thaws out. This will shorten the life of the outside unit considerable running it all iced up.

My Honeywell thermostat does not heat the house to the selected temperature. It will come on but not long enough to heat the house to the temp I selected.

Verify that you have heat coming from the vents.
Also do you use a heat pump system with electric emergency heat?
It may be that if it is to cold outside that the heat pump can not handle the load due to the cold outside and you will need to turn on the emergency heat.
Keep me posted.

Heat pump that just blows cool air

is the condenser operating? what is the outdoor temperature? A heat pump is a cooling system with a reverse gear, most reversing valves which make this possible fail to the heat mode so it is not likely to be the problem. You should have either gas or electric back-up heat. If you switch to emergency heat do you get warm air? Really need to find out more to make an informed guess at your problem, the simple stupid would be is the circuit breaker to the condensing unit possibly tripped or shut off?
