Question about Apple iPHONE 2G 8GB

1 Answer

IPhone 2G stuck while restoring / Unlocking. After restart, not getting recognized by computer?

Power / Sleep button was not working. I used redsn0w 0.9.14b2 to recreate an ipsw to enter into DFU mode. After I went to DFU mode, I used redsn0w 0.9.4 to unlock. It got stuck at around 80 percent. I opened redsn0w again. As soon as I opened, phone got restarted. Its still locked and not getting recognized iTunes or my computer. When I connect it to charger it'll charge. As the power button was not working, I waited for battery to go down as it'll get switch off itself. After that I connected the phone to computer again. It was charging for sometime and got switched on. But still my iTunes / Computer is not recognizing my phone. iPhone 2G, Windows 7 64bit, iTunes 10.7.

It's possible that there is a short in the battery cell and/or that you got water in the divice. My experience with Apple is that their customers are #1. Give them a call and they should at least get you to a point of if they will fix it for free or how much it will cost you.

The phone possibly could be stuck in a restore loop. This sometimes happens due to trying to install a mismatching Baseband / iOS. Try downloading "Tiny Umbrella" and using it to remove the device from recovery. Your other option is to Jailbreak the phone using redsn0w. This will get around the reboot loop, although you will have to be able to use the power button on the phone to put it into DFU mode to jailbreak or use a custom iOS.

NOTE: Those of you who rely on a carrier unlock MUST STAY AWAY from Redsn0w and iOS 4.2.1.
Follow the step by step instructions posted below to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 with Redsn0w 0.9.6b4:
Step 1: Download iOS 4.2.1 for your version of iOS device.
Step 2: Update/Restore to iOS 4.2.1 using the IPSW file you just downloaded via iTunes 10.1.

Jailbreak and Unlock Your iPhone 3G Using RedSn0w (Windows) [4.2.1]

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3G on the 4.2.1 firmware using RedSn0w for Windows.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 4.2.1 firmware from below and place it in the same folder.

4.2.1 (3G): iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

Extract the redsn0w executable from the RedSn0w zip file into the same folder.
44902-500.png

Step Two
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.
44469.jpg

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Shift and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.
44470-500.png

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 4.2.1 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.
44922-500.png

Step Three
Once iTunes has finished updating your iPhone to the desired firmware open the Pwnage folder on your desktop and launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.
44443.png

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button
44904.png

Step Five
Select the 4.2.1 firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder on our desktop then click Open.
44905-500.png

Step Six
Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.
44906.png

Step Seven
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data
44448.png

Step Eight
From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like.
44908.png

Verbose boot displays detailed information on boot of your device and is generally only needed by developers and advanced users.

Make sure Cydia is selected. For this tutorial we will also select Custom boot logo and Custom recovery logo.

When you click to select each custom logo option a dialog window will appear asking you to select the image. Locate the image you would like to use then press the Open button.
44909-500.png

*Remember the rules for boot logos are: RGB or Grayscale format with Alpha channel and dimension below 320x480. If you would like to use the iClarified ones they can be found here: Boot Logo, Recovery Logo

Notice that RedSn0w can Enable multitasking, Enable homescreen wallpaper, and Enable battery percentage. If you do not need multitasking we would recommend deselecting it as it makes your iPhone 3G run very slow.

If you read the warning above and you would like to update your baseband to the 06.15 iPad version for unlock then check Install iPad Baseband. Click Yes when prompted to confirm your decision.
44912.png

Click the Next button to continue
44913.png

Step Nine
Please plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button
44914.png

Step Ten
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here
44915.png

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
44916.png

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.
44917.png

Step Eleven
RedSn0w will now downloaded the iPad baseband if needed and your iPhone will reboot
44918.png44919.png

Step Twelve
RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.
44920.png

Step Thirteen
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.
44921.png

NOTES:
If you have problems with RedSn0w on Windows Vista or Windows 7. Right click the executable and set it to run as administrator in Windows XP compatibility mode.

Got a new Iphone 3Gs and all seems to be ok but when I connect it to my pc all I get is a "iTunes cannot connect to this iPhone because of an unknown error". I'm hoping its something simple that I've just...

If your using a MAC try the below steps as this worked for me:

1. User - Library - Prefrences - com.apple.iTunes.plist
2. Delete that com.apple.iTunes.plist
3. Restart the computer. It should recognise.

If your using a PC the steps are lengthy, and the steps are:

Restore I-Phone
1) Close all programs and restart computer.
2) Open iTunes and plug in powered off iPhone with direct USB connection.
3) If iTunes fails to connect to iPhone...continue to #4, if it does...restore.
4) Shut DOWN iTunes again.
5) Power OFF the iPhone & Disconnect from computer. (Power off two ways-one will work, hold home and sleep button until off or just hold sleep button until off)
6) Hold down Home button & connect to computer using direct connected USB cable (keep holding down the home button until iTunes sees it).
7) It should go into recovery mode and iTunes should recognise it.
8) If you want to recover to previous software version, Hold Alt/Shift and click restore in iTunes. Then select the old update version.

If the above steps doesnot work then try the below steps:

1. Turn the iPhone ON
2. CONNECT it to the computer with a DIRECT USB connection.
3. Make sure iTunes is open so you'll know when it enters DFU mode.
4. HOLD the Power/Sleep-Wake button AND the Home button for 10 seconds.
5. RELEASE only the Power/Sleep-Wake button and continue to hold the Home button.
6. WAIT until iTunes recognizes the phone in DFU Restore mode (in Windows a bubble pops up saying it recognized new hardware "DFU Mode" or something to that effect)
The last step may take SOME TIME, like, say, even 60 seconds or so.
The screen should be OFF (black), if you see the "Connect to iTunes" logo, START OVER.
It may take a few tries to do the steps just right, just reboot
(hold both Power/Sleep-Wake AND Home until the Apple logo appears and the phone turns back on) then try again.
7. Then restore the iphone

-Plug one end of the cord into your phone and the other in your computer
-Remove the cord in your computer, leaving the cord in the phone still plugged in
-Hold both the home button and on/off button on the phone
-Once the screen turns off, let go of the on/off button but continue holding the home button
-Plug in the other end of the cord in your computer while still holding the home button on the phone
-Once the apple logo appears, continue holding until you see the plug into itunes screen on your phone
-Click restore.

Hope this should resolve your issue :)

How to unlock iPhone using PwnageTool or redsn0w + ultrasn0w combination

This will guide you on activating, jailbreaking and unlocking your iDevice & thus will be of 2 parts: Part 1 - Jailbreak with redsn0w; & Part 2 Unlocking with ultrasn0w.

Hardware compatibility:
  1. UNTETHERED JAILBREAK - iOS 4.2.1, 4.1, 4.0.2, 4.0.1 and 4.0
    • iPhone 3G
    • iPhone 3GS old bootrom
    • iPod touch 2G non-MC model kid_ant_5.png
  2. TETHERED JAILBREAK (?) - iOS 4.2.1 ONLY - you can use either greenpois0n or sn0wbreeze for untethered jailbreak, for these iDevices:
    • iPhone 3GS new bootrom
    • iPhone 4
    • iPod touch 2G MC model
    • iPod touch 3G
    • iPod touch 4G
    • iPad kid_ant_5.png
  3. UNLOCK - iOS 3.0 up to 4.2.1
    • iPhone 3G
    • iPhone 3GS old bootromkid_ant_5.png
  4. UNLOCK - iOS 3.0 up to 4.0.2 ONLY
    • iPhone 3GS new bootrom
    • iPhone 4
Not sure if your iPhone 3GS has old or new bootrom? CLICK HERE. Or if your iPod touch is MC or non-MC? CLICK HERE.

Compatible basebands (BB) for ultrasn0w 1.2.2:
  • 06.15.00 - iOS 3.2.2 from iPad (read further for details)
  • 05.13.04 / 01.59.00 - iOS 4.0.2, 4.0.1 & 4.0
  • 05.12.01 - iOS 3.1.3
  • 05.11.07 - iOS 3.1 & 3.1.2
  • 04.26.08 - iOS 3.0
Notice that BB 05.14.02 & 05.15.04 are NOT part of the list. You need to update these BB to 06.15.00 for ultrasn0w unlock to work. Read further for more info.

However, if your BB is 05.13.04 or lower, you can proceed with jailbreaking but make sure you DO NOT INSTALL THE IPAD BASEBAND.

WARNING: Read the following consequences of updating BB to 06.15.00:
  1. There is no way to come back down from 06.15, & there's no hiding the baseband version from Apple. You'll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way. kid_ant_5.png
  2. If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won't be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn't update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway). kid_ant_5.png
  3. Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won't ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail). You'll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you're unlocker you should already be doing that).
DO NOT PROCEED if you don't agree.

What you need: NOTE: Download iPad's 3.2.2 IPSW ONLY if you'll use PwnageTool. Also, download ONLY the IPSW for your current iOS version. CLICK HERE if you have no idea what version is installed on your iDevice, especially if it's currently disabled.

For jailbreaking other iOS versions like 4.3.2, use other versions of redsn0w. CLICK HERE to see the list of all redsn0w versions.

Procedures:

PART 1 - JAILBREAKING with redsn0w (all iDevices):
  1. Connect your iDevice to the computer, run redsn0w & click Browse kid_ant_5.pngkid_ant_57.jpgkid_ant_5.png
  2. Locate IPSW for your current iOS, select it & click Open kid_ant_5.pngkid_ant_58.jpgkid_ant_5.png
  3. Wait until it say IPSW successfully identified. Click Next kid_ant_5.png
  4. If you plan to unlock your iPhone 3G / 3GS old bootrom, you need to check Install iPad baseband to update BB to 06.15.00 kid_ant_5.pngClick Yes if you're OK with these consequences:kid_ant_5.pngkid_ant_60.jpgkid_ant_5.pngAgain, you only need this option if your BB is either 05.14.02 or 05.15.04. This will result to updating your BB to 06.15.00 which can be unlocked using ultrasn0w. kid_ant_5.pngAlso, if your BB is 05.13.04 or lower, this jailbreak will still work for your iPhone but make sure you DO NOT INSTALL THE IPAD BB! You don't need it! kid_ant_5.pngFor iPod touch users, the BB thing does not apply for you. so you have nothing to worry about.kid_ant_5.png
  5. Choose some more options before you click Next kid_ant_5.pngkid_ant_61.jpgkid_ant_5.png
  6. Turn OFF your iDevice & prepare to put it to DFU mode then click Next kid_ant_5.pngkid_ant_62.jpgkid_ant_5.png
  7. DFU mode: Press & hold the POWER button for 3 seconds kid_ant_5.pngkid_ant_63.jpgkid_ant_5.png
  8. DFU mode: Press & hold HOME button while still holding on the POWER button for 10seckid_ant_5.pngkid_ant_64.jpgkid_ant_5.png
  9. DFU mode: Release the POWER button but keep holding on the HOME button for another 15 seconds or until you see Jailbreaking... on redsn0w kid_ant_5.pngkid_ant_65.jpgkid_ant_5.png
  10. Wait until it tells you that The rest of the process takes place on your iDevice. Click Finish kid_ant_5.pngThat will take around 8 to 9 minutes to complete
Once the jailbreak is done, open your iDevice & you'll find Cydia on the 2nd page of your homescreen.

PART 2 - UNLOCKING with ultrasn0w (iPhone ONLY):kid_ant_5.png
  1. Open Cydiakid_ant_5.pngDon't worry if Cydia's icon is blank/all-white, it will still work. kid_ant_5.pngThe first time you open Cydia, this is what you'll see (image below), then it will close itself and take you back to the homescreenkid_ant_5.pngkid_ant_66.jpgkid_ant_5.png
  2. Open Cydia again. Before you proceed with the unlock, go to Changes first and do a Complete Upgrade kid_ant_5.png
  3. Tap Reboot Device after the upgrade kid_ant_5.png
  4. After reboot, you can then unlock. Open Cydia again (for the third time), and tap the following (in sequence):
    • Manage
    • Sources
    • repo666.ultrasn0w.com
    • ulrasn0w kid_ant_5.png
  5. Tap Install, then tap Confirm kid_ant_5.png
  6. And finally, tap Reboot Device

My iphone 2g only shows the apple for 10 seconds then shuts down

Try restoring it...here's how...
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone or iPod touch, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
  2. Power off the device (Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the the iPhone or iPod touch to turn off.
  3. Press and hold the Home button while reconnecting the USB cable to iPhone. When you reconnect the USB to iPhone, the device should then power on.

Note: If you see the message "Charging... Please Wait" , let the device charge for at least 10 minutes to ensure the battery has some charge and then start with step 2 again.
  4. Continue holding the Home button while iPhone starts up. While starting up, you will see the Apple logo.
  5. When you see "Connect to iTunes" on the screen, you can release the Home button andiTuneswill display the recovery mode message:

If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, then disconnect the USB cable from iPhone and repeat steps 3-6.
After this you'll need to jailbreak it too....

Make sure you are running iTunes 8.2. Download the 3.0 ipsw (iphone1,1_3.0_7A341_restore). Connect the phone to iTunes and wait for it to detect. Put the phone into DFU mode (hold the power and home buttons for about 10 seconds, until the phone turns off. After the phone turns off, continue holding the power and home buttons for 5 seconds. After 5 seconds, release the power button but continue to hold the home button.) It should take about 10-15 seconds and iTunes will detect the iphone in DFU recovery mode. If the apple logo appears on the iphone or if the screen lights up at all, repeat the process. There should be nothing on the iPhone at all, like its turned off. Once the iPhone is connected to iTunes and is in DFU mode, hold SHIFT on your PC and click restore (Windows). Select the ipsw file you downloaded for restore. Once the iPhone finishes restoring and updating to the 3.0 firmware, jailbreak using redsn0w. After jailbreak, use ultrasn0w through Cydia to unlock. There are plenty of instruction sites for getting and using redsn0w if you don't have it already. I like iclarified.com, but you can probably choose from many.

Hope this is helpful, please don't forget to rate. If you have any other questions, or need any more help with this, send me an email.

Download redsn0w. Also, if you are talkin about holding the option key, then i'm assuming you have the ipsw file already. Jailbreak the phone using redsn0w, and then through Cydia (which will be on the iphone after jailbreak) get and install ultrasn0w. If you have any questions about detailed unlocking instructions, send me an email. And I'll go into more detail.
