My engine only backfires when I try to start it. Why would this be happening?

The most common reason for this is a faulty fuel system. But here are a few problems that will cause a back fire: incorrect timing, faulty spark plug wires, vacuum hose leaks, computer faults, God-Bless!

Why does my Motor starts but does not go wen I give it throttle

What sort of motor is it? A two stroke or four stroke?
If it is a four stroke it could be a number of reasons why it doesn't go when you give it throttle. It's difficult to help you if you're not providing lots of details. Is the motor by itself or is it a ride-on lawn mower? Usually something like your problem is the result of lack of sump oil and or the timing is incorrect, therefore it can backfire. If it is a two stroke then the carburettor is probably clogged and cannot provide fuel at high revs but just manages to run at low revs.

Honda gx160 qh26 wont start, backfires thorugh exhst, new plug, re&re carb, valves in. .006 ex. .008 , sos please

The Honda GX160 is a single-cylinder multipurpose engine, so it doesn't have a timing belt, fuel filter, or any other wires other than the single spark plug wire and a ground. I'm having the same trouble with my Honda GX160. Spark is good, compression feels a bit lacking though, I haven't measured it. I've heard that the carburetor might be the cause, either needing to be cleaned or replaced as a whole. Dunking it in CLR works wonders, and if that doesn't work, you could probably find a new carburetor pretty cheaply.

Hello i have a 1987 honda shadow when i down shift the moter back firers my freinds tell me it has aftermarket exuast pipes on it. so do i have to change jets in the carb. The spark plugs are tan to white...

If there are aftermarket exhaust pipes on your bike, the carburetor should have been rejetted at the same time. It does sound like a lean issue, especially where your spark plugs are tan/white. It's not going to hurt anything to be a little lean, just have an annoying backfire. The only time you should have to worry is if your plugs have no color but white and it backfires while riding, not only downshifting. If you are concerned about the backfiring, I would suggest changing jets, especially the pilot jet. The pilot jet is where you are getting your backfire from. When you let off the throttle and downshift, the main jet circuit is closed and fuel is pulled through the pilot circuit. The pilot circuit cannot provide as much fuel as the main circuit, especially when the motor pulls higher rpms on downshift. This will cause a lean backfire. I know it has been several months since you posted this and you may have this corrected already, but I just stumbled upon your question. Hope this helps, Daniel.

The bike just backfires i change the oil pump gear and now thats all it does is backfire

Honda motorcycle suffers from sticky valve stems. this causes the intake valve to still be closing when combustion occurs - and a second explosion occurs in the manifold - which you hear as a back-fire. 2 oz Mega Power
Gas Treatment #93 in the fuel and 6 oz Mega Power Engine Tune Up in the oil and a couple 500 mile oil filter changes- each with 6 oz Mega Power Engine Tune Up in the new oi. I run both all the time to keep the problem away. Get the products for your cars and your bike. Source:

1994 Honda CR 250 R will not start and backfires

Hi, Kmonroe8269 and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Faulty main circuit breaker and or connections.
4. Faulty ignition coil and or connections.
5. Faulty spark plug, oil or gas fouled, wrong heat range or service type, wrong gap, loose in the cylinder head, broken electrode or insulator.
6. Faulty spark plug cables, leaking or broken, internal damage check for spark leakage in the dark.
7. Faulty ignition module, switch, CKP, MAP, CMP, sensor and or any connector in the ignition circuit could have corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets
8. Burnt exhaust valve or air leak in the exhaust system.
