Trying to run ubuntu

I downloaded ubuntu today followed the burn to disc and i got that all done, then i put it in my dell desktop running default with xp, i restarted it and i got ubuntu to come on the screen, and i wanted to just try it and so i  clicked try without installing anything, and it went to the ubuntu logo with the loading bar underneath it, the bar just scrolled across and across then finally loaded fully, and the display went blank and then it acted like it was restarting in ubuntu and then the screen just stayed black, Please help i cant figure it out. Thank you,  Kodi Fletcher

It sounds like Ubuntu chose a screen resolution that your monitor doesn't support. For the sake of sanity, I would a reboot and then try booting to Windows to ensure that what camone311 suggests happened isn't so -- I doubt it, as the install process is more involved than just 1 click - there are SEVERAL variables (time, date, username, passwords, how much of the hard drive to use, etc) that have to be set before anything is written to the hard drive.

If you're able to boot to Windows, then I would boot back to the CD and give it another go. At the menu where it says Try Ubuntu... there's an option to change the graphics modes - I would try safe graphics mode or VESA to see if that fixes the black screen problems that you were having.

Toshiba satellite M45-S169 won't boot ubuntu from DVD

Your really pushing the lower minimum requirement limits if you're trying to use Ubuntu 11 or Ubuntu 12. Especially with your on-board graphics chip which borrows system ram.

Try Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS (Lucid Lynx) instead.

Go Here and download the 1st link on the list under Desktop CD:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/

OR...

Here is a direct link to the ISO file you need to download and then burn to a CD:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04.4-desktop-i386.iso

If you don't have Software for burning iso's to CD's then download and install this totally FREE CD Burning program:

I need a recovery disk for a compaq presario sr1610nx

I wish the best outcome for your Dad!

Note: When performing operating system installations (or other technical operations involving the hard drive and partitioning and formatting software tools), make sure to back up your important data first.

Your best, easiest, and cheapest bet is to buy the recovery CD/DVD from the manufacturer. In your case, this is HP. It will likely run $20. Put your computer's information in at the HP Store:

http://h20141.www2.hp.com/Hpparts/Default.aspx?mscssid=B082A879119D4FDF9B19111AAC896A99

You can alternatively call them, if you have problems with locating the information on their website.

By getting the factory restore discs from the manufacturer, you will know that you are not installing a virus or other hidden software on your computer, because you have obtained the software from a trusted source.

Alternatively, you could load a different operating system, like Linux. Some distributions are very friendly, (almost as friendly to use as Windows) like Ubuntu. You can download, then burn the install CD/DVD from here (obviously you will need to do this from another computer):

Sounds like your OS installation got corrupted somehow. See if you can boot to the recovery/ diagnostic partition if you have one. (On dells it is F8 at startup, but yours may be different). If you can get in there run the diagnostics and see if it finds any problems.
I would also try booting into a bootable version of linux like ubuntu. You can simply download it and burn to a cd, then put that in your drive and boot linux right off the disc. If you can successfully boot that way then you know that your hardware is ok and it is a problem with your OS. If that is the case you need to reinstall windows or try doing a windows repair.

If this was a help please give me 4 thumbs up as I am trying to build up my rep on this site!

You will need to burn a disc from the image file you downloaded. You can use windows built in function or Imgburn (free).
This creates a bootable disc, pop it into the drive, reboot with your dvd drive set as 1st bootable device. Follow the onscreen prompts

Ubuntu installation

Relax Sairam -- you don't have know all these answers.

First step, download Ubuntu and burn to a CD .

Second adjust your bios if necessary to change the boot preferences on your machine, so that it will try your CD/DVD device first before trying to boot from a hard disk.

Third, let the Ubuntu Live CD execute and bring up a desktop. On the desktop, there should be an icon to actually install Ubuntu. It will guide your through all the decisions that you need to make.

You may find it advantageous to have a "dual boot" configuration on your machine... i.e., having the choice of running some windows operating system, or ubuntu.
