There's a thing called a 'backlight' that illuminates the screen. It's a miniature fluorescent light tube. It's probably been smashed in the fall.
You're going to need to find someone who can supply and fit a new one. If you have a spare monitor, you can plug your vga lead into the connector on the rear of your laptop and use it that way, but obviously it wont be portable any more.

Latitude B130 screen works great then cuts out to complete black, works with external monitor

Are you sure that the display is not set for external monitor only? Also take bright flashlight and shine on the display. If you can see the images then the problem is with the back light and usually caused by a bad inverter. Some times you can get the back light or inverter bu most times it is easier and cheaper to replace the entire display.

Sony pcg-81114L power supply not detected

If thelaptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out.Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles andwill lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% andgradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR Thebattery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the batterydrops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to anunacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced.

Vaio PCG-9S1L Screen is very dark, extremely hard , LAPTOP SONY

As stated in your post "two year old may have dropped it"
If this is true than the backlight has probably been damaged. The small flourescent tubes that generate light through the LCD display.

Welcome to Vista. Windows Vista is automatically set up to power down after you have left it alone for too long. If you press the power button everything should be fine. Otherwise tell me what happens.
