You don't want them both to have the same address, that would be like you and your next door neighbour having the same address - very confusing and neither computer will work properly.

If you want to do this is because your Internet Service Provider only gives you one IP address, this is fairly normal and you can connect more than one computer to the internet by using a gateway or router. You can get a cheap one now for about $30 that will allow you to connect up to 4 computers to the internet with cables.

Click the start menu, go to settings, go to control panel, choose network connections, on the left side of the window, you can see change settings of this connection, you can now make the computer generate the new IP address.

Connect motorola modemsbSB6121 to Belink N600 wireless router with out losing internet signal

Step one turn on PC directly connected to ModemsbSB6121 without Wi FI router being involved.
Step two go to Command prompt type in ipconfig (press enter)
Step three note IP address of default gateway and ip address issued to P.C.
Step four type in default gateway address into browser and log into Modem.
Step five look for DHCP Server and allocate IP addresses from at least 50 for example 192.168.0.50 starting ip lease ending ip lease 192.168.0.254
Step six connect Wi Router to P.C. via ethernet cable only - remove ModemSB6121
Step Seven shutdown and restart p.c
Step Eight go to Command prompt type in ipconfig (press enter)
Step Nine note IP address of default gateway and ip address issued to P.C.
Step Ten type in default gateway address into browser and log into Wi Fi Router
Step Eleven Change IP address on Router to 2 as example 192.168.0.2. (it has to match in that modem device would have been 192,168.0.1)
(if it was 10.0.0.1 make wi fi 10.0.0.2 make sure subnet mask is the same like 255.255.255.0)
Step twelve Change DHCP Server to off
Step Thirteen may need to set default gateway to MODEM IP address for example 192.168.0.1
Step Fourteen plug modem router into Wi Fi router may need to plug into WAN port on WI FI router .
Step Fifteen shutdown and Restart Computer
Step Sixteen go to Command prompt type in ipconfig (press enter)
Step Seventeen type in PING 192.168.0.1 (if this is modem IP address and default gateway IP addess)
All this above is to avoid IP address conflicts or mismatching
Subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0
either it uses 192.168.0.1 or it uses 10.0.0.1 make sure Wi FI router is set to different address to Modem Router.
I suspect either a clash occurs or your P.C gets a different IP range from ther WI FI DHCP server.
Happy troubleshooting !

Each of the eleven(!) computers needs:
1. a _unique_ IP-address
2. the IP-address of the "gateway" device
3. the "network-mask" (usually 255.255.255.0)

The IP-address for your server must *NOT* match the IP-address of any of the 10 computers.

The IP-address for your server must *NOT* match the IP-address of the "gateway" computerl.

Any network device, PC or otherwise, needs an IP address assigned. So, yes, both your PC's need an IP address.
Assuming your ISP lets you have multiple PC's(IP's) then you'll have to use the IP space provided by your ISP. The default gateway would also be provided by your ISP.

The way you SHOULD do this is to use a router, linksys for example. This way you can setup you private network(I.E. 192.168.10.10 for example). This will hide and protect YOUR private space from would be hackers. The router would use the REAL IP address on the outbound side to talk to the cable/DSL modem.

btw...you can use the ipconfig command at the command prompt(I.E. a DOS window) on your working machine to see the DHCP address and gateway that was assigned. Sound like your ISP only allows you one IP. The router solution above will fix that and let you connect as many as you want because the ISP will only see the one IP from the router.

What is the difference between public & private addresses

Private IP addresses are used either to hide systems from the public Internet or to provide an additional range of addresses to organizations that do not have sufficient public IP addresses to distribute on their network. Organizations can use these numbers to assign internal IP addresses without having to worry about an IP address conflict or having to obtain a new block of IP addresses.
If you connect to the Internet as a home user with a residential router, you will typically benefit from this arrangement. Although you may be paying for only one IP address through your Internet service provider (ISP), you can have unlimited devices connected to the Internet.
For example lets say you live in an apartment complex with only one mailbox. all the apartments have numbers but no matter what all the incoming and outgoing traffic goes to that one mailbox.

I hope this helps.

Multiple WAN IP Addresses with a Linksys Router

Yes, however we recommend using the following procedure is the only way you can do so without a block of IP addresses. The example below is for instances where you have multiple public IP addresses that are not in block form. For our example the ISP has given us 3 Public IP addresses. One goes to the FTP server, Web Server, and the Router. You can setup the router for whomever your ISP is. If you have a dynamic IP address and you're unsure on the setup, please see the article on setting up the router with a static IP address. If you have a static IP address please our article on setting up static IP addresses with the router, and it will describe how to setup the router with a static IP address. Once the router is setup, it will provide the 3 PC's (In our example) with internet access. The remaining two public IP addresses should be assigned to the WEB Server and the FTP server. Note - The Web and FTP servers will not be on the Local Area Network of PC-1, PC-2, and PC.
