Can I copy d partition from a bad hard drive that tested for 10 min before bad hard drive showed up in test

You could run the chkdsk utility

click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to recovery any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive there are many ways of running the chkdsk utility

click start right click on my computer you should see your drive usually C: select properties click tools check now tick both boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery on any bad sectors

then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart

it will only schedule on restart if its the Primary hard drive with an operating system on it

do not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage your computer

for USB drives click start control panel administrative tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes

automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now start

you might tick one box then return after its finished the first repair then return and tick the second box you should not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive

I found that you get best results by ticking one box then returning after it has finished then tick the other box

then try copting your d partition

The message you are getting is from SMART, which is the software integrated into the drive. It is essentially telling your system that it can't read the drive. Here are a few reasons why this may have happened:

1. Drive not enabled in BIOS
2. Serial (SATA) or Parallel (PATA) drivers are not properly installed
3. Faulty or unplugged data cable. (They rarely go bad, but you should still
check it).
4. Drive is not spinning up. Check that it is still getting power. If so, can you
feel or even hear it spinning at boot?
5. Incorrect jumper settings on drive. Probably not a concern, unless you've
changed anything, or added another drive.
6. The drive is faulty (ie, dead).

If it is not 1 thru 5, then you are left with the grim prospect of # 6. If it is under warranty, send it back to Maxtor (go to for return instructions). You will usually lose your data when you return it to the factory, as they will swap out the drive for another and send you the new one.

As far as your data is concerned, if the drive is dead, your data is history. If it is highly valuable data, you might have the drive repaired - there are local shops who can do it, or at least recover the data from it, but the service is typically very expensive (a recent customer lost their client files on a 120gb drive, and the recovery cost was over a thousand dollars).

Hopefully, you backed up your data onto CD-ROM or DVD. If you didn't, it is something you will want to start doing in the future, at least weekly, if not daily.

Sorry I can't give you better news. On the plus side, if you can't get it working again and it truly is dead, new drives are very cheap, these days.

Hi there. you may try changing the drive letter by going to disk management. Right click "my computer"icon and select manage. Go to Disk Management. check the size of the drive you're having problem with. If it still shows that there are files saved, right click the drive letter you're having problem with. Change the drive letter to Y. Try accessing after.

Check in BIOS that your HDD id showing.

if it is showing then do the DPS self Test of the HDD. Surely it will solve your issue.

Otherwise it will be the issue of motherboard.

You may have a bad hard drive. If you are able to log into Windows, run Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostic software.
1. Download Data lifeguard:
Hard drive analysis software
2. Install the software and run an extended test on your main partition.

This usually means that you have HDD bad sector or some kind of HDD read/write error.Boot up in DOS mode and use HDD Regenerator to check and repair your hard disk drive.This can be easily done with Hiren's Boot CD. You can download it from here. After downloading, burn ISO on a disk and try booting from CD-Drive.

When i boot my system it display a message unable to read hard disk drive then when run diagnostic test it givee me an error message-BIOHD-8

It pretty much means that your hard drive is going/has gone bad. Get a new hard drive and some software Acronis or Partition Magic for example to make a copy of that hard drive and perhaps you'll be able to save all of you data.

Drive only reports 56gb to partition - missing 100gb! How do I access the remaining space?

Click Start
Right-mouse click "My Computer".
Click "Manage".
Expand the "Storage" part of the tree.
Click "Disk Management".
View the diagram for your disk-drive.
Does it show the 56GB partition, followed by 100GB of "unallocated" space,
or does it show one (approximately) 160GB partition?

If the former, backup all the files in the partition (copy to an external disk-drive, or copied to DVD-recordable disks, or to another computer).
Then, use "Disk Management" to delete that "small" partition, and to define a new partition that "spans" the entire volume, and to initialize the partition.
Then, copy the "saved" files back onto the drive.

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your motherboard to your hard drive make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty

Boots halfway then it stops.

That is a sign of Hard Disk Failure or bad clusters due to inproper formating

Perform this tests to ascertain your Hard disk durability
1. Turn Off the computer
2. Restart it, Press F2 to go to the BIOS at the black screen when the PC comes up displaying the manufacturers name:
3. Goto the Advanced Menu or the Menu Option that displays your Drives.
4. On the drive that has the problem, select the option that performs a hard disk test.

This would take sometime and at the end, the result of the test would tell if your Hard disk is bad.

A second option is to use a reliable hard disk partition software like partition magic to reformat and repair bad clusters and damaged sectors in your harddisk

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

A 20Gb Quantum Fireball LCT20 could be nearing its life end considering the length of time it has been in service. Perhaps what could be done is to perform a burn-in test on the 20Gb HD attaches as a Slave or Secondary on a 2nd PC or alternately, as an external mass storage device through an IDE to USB adapter. Burn-in test would be a multiple time scanning fro errors as those used by Norton Disk Doctor. Alternately, you can also Partition Magic to partition/format and eventually test the HD.

In your concern of PC slow down after 10 minutes, it is possible that:
  • the HD is slowing after some time or having difficulty searching for the called for system files;
  • heat related, either on the HD motor/bearings or even on the CPU (thermal throttling);
  • there are a number of software running in the background using the PC's memory;
  • presence of virus and/or malicious software.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Trying to use the recovery software to rebuild the hard drive back to original. I keep getting error messages that asks me to restart the computer (over and over). One message states that it cannot find...

Most likely the recovery partition is corrupt, or your hard drive has gone bad. the fix for both start with thing. contact the manufacture and getting a copy of the original install CD's. you may be able to find the else where on the net for sale. once you have the CD's use them to reinstall the OS. if you still have the same problem after you have the CD's get your hard drive tested, or replace your hard drive. (a hard drive cost about the same as a diagnostics at most places).
