Question about NetGear : WG111 54 Mbps Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter, RETAIL (DSNGWG111)

1 Answer

WG111v2 plasters my screen with bits and pieces of the Netg menu.

When TimeWarner installed our wireless network the put in a WG111v2 on one desktop computer. What happened is that the bottom part of the Netgear menu, which contains the connection speed, strength of signal etc., fragments into many parts all over the screen. For example, once I was trying to check off boxes and these annoying purple pieces would 'follow' my cursor and block what I was trying to read. When I disconnected the unit and restarted the computer there were no problems. I tried alot of actions on my computer to no avail. I finally bought a new Compaq desk top and the same unit works fine. Do you think it's some virus on my old computer or have you heard of this before? Thanks, Mark.

    Thanks for the help. What you suggested makes a lot of sense and even though I bought a new computer, at least I am now confident that the computer in question isn't plagued by a virus and I can use it elsewhere. Thanks again, Mark.

Hi Mark, I don't think it was a virus, it may have just been that the router wasn't compatible with your old PC. It could have been a driver issue also. Whenever you disconnect something that makes your PC malfunction, and then the PC works fine, it's almost definitely the device that you disconnected at fault. Personally I think you should have called the people that connected it to begin with, and have them fix or replace it. That is what you paid for and that's what you should get.

    Hey Mark, just to be on the safe side you should make sure your virus protection on your old PC is up to date, and run a full system scan. For the issue you had, it's really weird for something like that to happen from the router. If you want to be completely rid of any or all viruses on your old PC, you need to use a program like "Wipedrive" or equivalent. Afterwards you would have to re-install the Operating System and all programs, which is very time consuming and I don't recommend it unless you're an advanced PC user. FYI ... when you just re-install the Operating System, even though it appears to overwrite everything, information can still be retrieved using specific programs. Hope all this helps you out some.

How do you manually install a netgear wg111v2 without disk and computer can read it?

Best option may be to use a computer with an internet connection, go to netgears website, locate the product you own and download the driver onto a thumb drive and use that file to install the driver on the computer with the wireless adapter.

The blue light on my wg111v2 in not flashing. is it because i did a system recovery on my pc with the usb plugged in ?

You will need to install the drivers for the wireless adaptor. The flashing blue light simply indicates that there is activity (communications) with a wireless access point.
You can find the drivers for it here;
