I just got this computer and when i turn it on it says that it needs a pass word for the user name john preto but it has a password hint or marvelous so how do i find out the pass word or change it since i just got it brand new
As the Windows installation has obviously been used for safety I would recommend reloading if you have the wherewithal (disks, knowledge etc.) but you do not need to fit a new disk! Boot from the XP CD, select options to do a new installation. When you get to the list of partitions (there may only be one) delete them all to ensure the disk is clean and create a new one. If you don't have the driver disk download them from the Dell site.
It might be useful as well to look up the service tag of the PC on the Dell site as this would show when it was supplied and what warranty is on it.
You could also try some other options... Try booting into safe mode (hold F8 during boot up) choose the safe mode option. This should give you an option to log into the administrator account. Which hopefully is not password protected. If you can log in to that account you can remove all of the network and password settings for the computer under the "users" in the control panel settings. The other option would be to try a boot CD and change or extract the password in a utility. Try googling "boot CD" for this option, don't pay for anything though, there are plenty of free options. If neither of these works for you unfortunately fwadley is right, you'll need to re-install the OS.

It seems that installation didn't go very well. I have done many upgrades and it picked user name and password. No problems.
Try to get a disk with the version of windows 10 you downloaded so that you revert back to the previous version or do a repair.
Since I am not in front of your computer and as a technician then i could find some other information.
You should be able to conduct a recovery of your system by rebooting and following the steps which quickly follow for system setup before the operating system comes online. then use your recovery disk to help you get your user name and password reinstated. It would help if we had more information on your system and software.
You will need the Windows 2k disc. However you won't be able to find one unless you check out like ebay. Win 2k has been EOL for years now. I would suggest even buying the lowest end computer for around $250-300 and it would be tremendously faster than what you have currently. You could also check around at pawn shops, mom and pop computer stores for cheaper ~$50-100 dollar comptuters that would be better than this. I wouldn't waste your time trying to fix such an old computer.
If you are talking abou the user name and assword on login screen then you need to restart computer and start tapping F8 key on keyboard, you will get Advanced boot option, stop pressing the F8 key, you need to select safe mode with the help of up and down arrow keys on keyboard, hit enter on Admin username if it ask then click on start>control panel>user name and then select your user name and change the password, restart your computer and then enter the new password.
* If you do not find user name under control panel then look for classic view on top left corner of the screen and click on it.
This will only works if your computer(hopes windows running) has no password in safe mode.
just go to safe mode by pressin f8 key and then enter through administrator credits not the user name. then go to the control panel and go to user accounts and then create a new account with admin credits and then restart and login with ur new account. after that again go to user accounts from safe mode in control panel and delete the account that is password protected(which u forgot). then the computer will work again.
WARNING- personal data in mydocuments and other folder related to the account will be deleted. if you didn't backup the account before deleting. do backup from the new account.
I have used this when the local admin account has been disabled as well on a PC. I have found it best to set the password to be blank rather than using it to define a known password. Once ou are in windows you can then create your own User account and then delete the one on it.
Also try pressing Control + Alt + Delete twice and see if it drops back to the classic login screen and change the user to Administrator with no password.
its a bit long process(WINDOWS XP)
wot you have to do is turn off the computer completely
after you power it back on start hitting F8 KEY
You will get system advanced boot meny
using up or down arrow key highlight safe mode and press enter
it will ask your operating system just press enter again
it will load some files and then you will get user name options
other than your name there would be an administrator
don't put in any password if it asks
just hit enter
if u are able to log on as an administrator you can go to user accounts option in control panel and cad do anything
