Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Kenmore 11020922 fill/drain but no spin.

I know Coupler...ordering one.

Any way to make sure it's the coupler....

2nd, when I was checking the Agitator noticed a bunch of iron filings mixed with the grease on the 2nd half of the agitator, where the bolt goes in to hold the top half on the base.

Nothing look worn so I am not sure where these filings are coming from

Any ideas?

BTW, one thing I noticed is the basket wont spin, it rocks but no spinning or moving even with pushing manally.

To be honest I can't remember if the basket did spin but I believe it does, seems to be locked up. Jammed?

    Thanks again!

Oh, one more thing, if I have the washer on spin and press the lid button to make the washer run, it does move the basket bump of a turn like something is either locked up or a belt(I know it's beltless) is taking up slack then stops, the motor is running fine and sounds like it is normal. Only reason I notice that it wasn't spinning is my cloths were wetter than usual and there was a smell of heat or plastic or ozone...and I checked further otherwise I wouldn't have noticed because everything sounds fine.

If it agitates - the coupling is god. If not - It appears your coupling has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question

Sounds like clutch not catching, this may need to bed in .The fact it works okay with no load and no spin with load sounds like clutch/ but also could be motor torque.Ask repair man to recheck work done.

My son's Kenmore top load washer will not spin but the tub will fill with water. The motor hums when he turn the control to spin cycle. He lives in another state and I was looking at some you tube...

When he puts it into spin, does the water drain? If so, the pump is fine, as far as it not spinning, that is most likely either the coupler between the motor and the transmission, or the transmission itself.

To check the coupler, drain the washer, then pull the washer away from the wall and tilt it back on it's hind legs. Check to see that the rubber part of the coupler is intact and that the plastic parts are not stripped. Here's some pictures of the coupler http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Motor-Coupling/285753A/1195967

If the coupling is fine, and the motor is turning, then it's most likely the transmission, which you'd be best served having an appliance shop replace.

Hope this helps.

Kenmore 80 series washing machine fills but wont agitate draqins but wont agitste or spin

My bet is on the drive coupler. if you can here the motor run and the machine will drain water then 99.9% it will be the drive coupler.

This coupler is behind the motor and is what conects the motor with the transmission.

Washer wouldn't agitate and wouldn't spin when full.

The motor coupling is located between the back of the drive motor and the front of gearcase (transmission). It is a small component comprised of two plastic three-tined pieces with a black rubber bushing between them. When a coupler goes bad, the washer will fill and drain normally, but will not agitate or spin. The washer will exhibit a loud rattling sound after it fills and gets to the agitation portion of the wash cycle. It is common to find black rubber dust particles under the washer, or chunks or pieces of the coupler plastic. Sometimes, the coupler may look good in place, but the center hole that inserts on the motor shaft rounds out, causing the coupler to free spin. If these descriptions sounds like your washer symptoms and you suspect you have a bad coupler, the following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

Earlier model motor couplers were notorious for breaking. The manufacturer came out with a newer model that is more resilient. The part number is provided in the link. Replacement parts can be purchased on line at searspartsdirect.com, appliancepartspros.com, pcappliancerepair.com or repairclinic.com. All these sites offer great service and competitive pricing, so shop all of them for the best price. Use the part number I provided and the "Search By Part Number" feature for your search criteria. The part costs less than $15 in most cases. If you do not wish to order on line, take the part number I provided to your nearest appliance parts retailer. This is a common part they should carry in their inventory.

If you have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

HI, Even tho it drains ok, does it spin? If it doesn't spin or agitate, it could be the coupler that attachec the transmission to the motor. The agitator is ok, it is designed to work that way. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Washer fills to level but does not go to wash cycle.

There is a coupler that connects the motor to the transmission and I think this is broken on your machine. The symptoms are it will fill and drain but not spin or agitates the clothing. Is this your symptoms? If your coupler is broken, part number is 285753 and this should resolve your problem. Let me know if I can help further....

Kenmore model 110 will not agitate or spin............ it will fill with water and drain ........but will not spin or agitate.............. you can hear the motor runniing

You have a broken drive coupler. This is a very common part that fails. This is the piece of rubber between the motor and the transmission. Lean the machine back and reach behind the motor and you will be able to feel the rubber coupler wiggle. This is supposed to be tight. Another sign of it being bad is rubber on the floor under the machine. I replace at least 5 a week. This is your problem for sure. The part number is 285753. You can order this at sears.com or your local parts store should have it in stock.

Kenmore 80 series won't spin

If it is draining then the motor is turning the pump so it is ok.
This washer has no belt so that is not the problem.
Remove the cabinet and bypass the lid switch wires and put into a spin. Watch the clutch to see if it is turning. If the clutch housing is not turning and you know for sure the coupler is not broken then you need a new transmission. If the clutch housing is turning but the basket is not spinning you have something binding the basket or you need a new basket drive and clutch.
If you have only looked at the coupler from underneath you may not be able to tell if it is broken in the center. If it is broken again your transmission is not staying in neutral drain until the water is drained. That means it is going into spin with full load of clothes and water. This puts a lot of pressure on the coupler and causes them to fail prematurely. If this is the case you will need a new transmission.
Post back if you have any questions.
