Open Question

We have a Sullair LS-160 compressor that has lots of oil coming out of the air intake housing. What could cuase that.

your not return balve is stuck open or your valves are sticking the pressure from the tank is going back to the pump so when the compressor goes on the compress stroke its very hard as it has to open the valve with pressure behind it its hard to explaing buddy but on the tank you wil see anon return valve from the pump unscrew it and inside is a rubber with a spring turn the rubber around and try this if doesnt work you need to inspect the valves (if sticking) good luck

sounds like something has compromised the piston or rings. would advise you remove the cylinder head and inspect cylinder and bore, think you will no doubt find something broken.

Replace the spring, ball and valve seat mounted on the bottom under compressor end. They are inside the metal housing connected with four hex head bolts. The large hose from the air receiver is connected to this housing and will also have to be removed. The ball seats against the valve seat to keep residual air pressure when compressor is shut down from forcing oil back up into intake.

We relocated our Sullair 3700 about 30m from air receiver, due to excess dust. Now the compressor never stops running, trips on high pressure yet the receiver is not achieving the pressure required

would say dust has done something to do with it
before you had time to move it

will need the compressor serviced

first simple words
to replace the compressor pressure shut off /turn on valve
that should fix the pressure trip build up limit problem

and maybe a partial strip down to clean out the casing
if dust build up is noted

where 3 oil lines come together. 2 cooler lines and 1 line to/from seperator tank.inside the housing where the lines connect is the thermostat

Craftsman Air Comp. 6 hp oil-less, 33 gal horz. tank - sounds really loud

Sources of noise from craftsman oil free compressors (could be Made by Campbell Hausfeld or Porter Cable) include loose fan, failing bearing/s on the piston rod and housing, failing seal ring on piston, air filter intake and loose motor mounts. With the housing cover off, check the fan blade for cracks or loose screw. Turn motor by hand till the piston is at top of stroke. Examine the cylinder for scratches close to top. If scratched, air is leaking past vinyl ring making noise and causing longer fill time. If everything looks ok, suspect noise coming from bearings. Hard to tell if bearings are failing by looking at them. I have seen many failures of the piston bearing on the crank (fairly easy to change, I use alternator bearing from auto parts ) , however, the bearing in the housing just behind the crank bearing is much harder to replacable. Good luck with your fix-it project.

I have a sullair ls - 120 we have been having problems with it getting hot and shuting off oil levels have been fine we have tryed different oil types we have took apart the unloader valve cleaned it and...

Get yourself a temperature gun and check a couple things:
1) Measure the oil injection temperature to the airend. This is a line going into the bottom side of the airend. 2) Measure the discharge temperature from the airend (this should be the same reading as the temperature gauge/readout on the compressor, but check to be sure)
You should get a temperature rise of about 25-30 degrees F over the airend. If you have more rise, you probably have an oil restriction: try an oil filter change.
If your oil injection temp is more than 160 degrees F or so, check the operation of the thermostatic valve. The thermo valve is a T shaped valve in the oil circuit. The oil line out of the bottom of the sump probably goes to a tee which splits flow to the cooler and the thermo valve. The oil goes through the cooler then to the other side of the thermo valve. The thermo valve should then mix the hot oil from the sump and the cool oil from the cooler to maintain the injection temp in the 150-160 degree range.
If you have cool oil coming from the cooler (should be maybe 140 F or less, and the injection temp is high, the thermo valve is bad. You can get a thermostat kit from your vendor to repair. If you've replaced the cooler, this thermo valve is probably the problem.

Sullair 185 screw compressor

The sullair 185 has a low oil pressure override button that you have to hold in while starting. after the oil pressure builds up(takes about ten seconds) you can release the button and the machine should continue to run.

hi mate ask the manufacturers as different compressor take different oils like im a compressed air engineer and i use rcr 32 and rcr 46 but i have never had to work on a sullair as there not common in our area
