Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

SOURCE: Hitachi DV-PF33U DVD Player / VCR Combo

It sounds like the sensor to tell the microcontroller that the tape is moving is not working. If that is so, the VCR would probably do the same thing in FF or Rewind. If you end up taking this unit into a repair shop, have them check the DVD's software version (it should be 1.250) If below that number, have them upgrade that as well. You can check the version yourself by pressing 1,2,3,4 and then "display" on the remote while the unit is on and no disc in DVD. After noting the version, just hit "power" on the remote to exit this mode.

On some of the DVD/VCR combo units, the VCR output is only available through the RF jack (channel 3), standard video1.gif (yellow) RCA jack and S-VIDEO jack. If you are using the Component jacks, the DVD side will work but the VCR will not. This is because the quality of video recorded on VHS tapes is so much lower than component quality video.
Thank you for rating this solution.

SOURCE: VHS tape plays for a few seconds and automatically ejects

My guess would be dirt on the rollers inside the VCR. They sesnse a jam and ejct. Try a VCR cleaner (with cleaning fluid) and see if that helps.

SOURCE: VHS won't play, sounds like tape will load then power shuts off.

This is similar or identical to another post, but here is an answer...

Hi, I have a solution you can try.
I had exaclty the same problem. When I tried to play a tape it would load (However, I recall I had to push hard to get the tape to be accepted, which is part of the problem) but would shut off after about 12 seconds, then when I powered back up the tape would eject. Finally I took the unit completely apart and attempted to use it with the covers off. Lo and behold, I found I could play a DVD on the unit without the unit powering off, but only if the room lights were on! If I tried to play a tape it would shut down the unit. So that led me to diagnosing the infrared loading and reel sensor circuits.

Background on that is there is an infrared LED that shines up through a plastic light pipe lens. The light from that LED (you can't see it) should shine on two photodiodes that are on either side of the tap mechanism, plus down through a gear with holes in it on to the reel sensor. When there is no tape inserted the two photodiodes will be illuminated and have about 0.2 volts across them. When a tape is installed the light will be blocked and the voltage goes up to above 2.5 volts across the diodes. You have to check this with the room lights dim as the diodes will respond to that light. When you block the light on either side of the plastic light pipe with your finger (with the unit disassembled) you should see the load motor engage, and it will back off when you take your finder away. For some reason in my unit the light from the LED was insufficient to turn on one of the diodes, and also to pulse the reel sensor when the gear turned. That could be due to component aging, or even if the light pipe started to cloud due to age, I don't know. However I was able to get the thing working...

In short I got the unit working by adding 3 resistors.
To do this you'll have to remove all the covers and remove the main PCB from the bottom chassis, unplug the power supply from the PCB, and the two ribbons going to the DVD unit. But you won't have to take off the VCR assembly, which is a pain. You just need some basic soldering skills, and remember where all those screws go...
First, I adjusted the voltage across the right-hand side load sensor diode to get the diode to switch on and off. I recall that I added 1meg across the diode. So the voltage then went from about 0.5v up to 2.8v from light to dark condition.
Second, I increased the current to the IR LED. I added a 330ohm resistor across the feeder to the LED. I recall that was R511 and was originally 220ohms. That was not quite sufficient to get the reel sensor working reliably. I didn't want to stress the LED by putting too much more current through it so looked for another idea.
Third I added 56k across the reel sensor diode to bring the voltage across it down so it would switch on and off as the reel sensor gear turned.
I now have a tape playing continuously in the unit and it seems ok for the time being. Hope that might work for you too.

I have a grundig gr1000(b) vhs/DVD combo. Is it possible to record from video cassette onto DVD? It doesn't seem to be mentioned in the instruction manual. Thanks for your help.

Yes! You can select to copy from VHS to DVD or DVD to VHS, set the VHS tape ready to play and press pause, then put a blank recordable DVD disk in and then select copy, the options for VHS to DVD or DVD to VHS can be selected and then it will copy, when the tape gets to the end it will turn off itself, if you want to stop earlier you will have to stop it! Hope this helps.

Can i record data from vcr to dvd

If you want to convert VCR tapes (VHS etc) to DVD discs then your best bet is to buy a second hand combo VCR DVD unit that will make life easier for you.

Otherwise you can buy adapters that need to be converted to PCs and this can be messy.
This article gives some idea about using PC capture units with software.

I have a apex tv and a dvd/vhs recorder, with a cable from wall only, how do I install

If you wish to record (VHS) off cable :
First connect the co-ax cable from the wall to the input on the DVD/VHS , then connect a second from the output of the DVD/VHS to the input of the TV.
You will need to match the channel (3/4) output and input. There should be a switch on the back of the DVD/VHS.
Tune the TV to channel 3 or 4 to match, To watch DVD/VHS .
Channel selection will be with the DVD/VHS when it is powered on.
TV will tune to channel when the DVD/VHS is off.

I can play DVD's but not VHS tapes. I hav checked all connections and several tapes to no avail. Thank you ! Ol' Fred

Hey Ol' Fred...
One of my good friends is an ol Fred so I felt compelled to stop in and help!
I'm not sure of your setup, but if you've got a combo DVD/VHS unit, make sure that you have out puts to the TV for Both parts separately... You can designate by accessing the TV's onscreen menu and setting up a separate source for DVD and one for VHS. I've found on my projection TV that it's best to use the Coax cable connections for the VHS to TV.
Then once it's setup with separate hookups to the Tv, you should have audio and video for VHS...

RCA 8295n dvd-vcr combo starts recording from VHS tape to disk and then stops.

Is the VHS tape a store bought movie or show?

MacroVision and other copy protection systems are put into store bought tapes and discs of movies and shows, and are read by your recording equipment. Once it reads this, it stops recording.

Does the screen turn red before it stops? This is one of the indications that MacroVision is stopping you.

I have a Magnavox ZV427MG9. I follow all directions in manual for dubbing VHS home movies to DVD but when I try to play the DVD back there's nothing on them. What am I doing wrong?

Depending on the procedure you may be pressing the record button instead of the D.Dubbing or Dubbing button. When recording from VHS to DVD you must first, load the blank DVD and VHS home movies, then play the VHS movies, then PAUSE the VHS movie when you want to START recording... then the only the you have to do is pressing the D.Dubbing button or the Dubbing button. If your VHS tapes starts to play after the Dubbing button is pressed you have been successful in Dubbing.

HOW DO I RECORD A DVD TO A VHS ON A VHS DVD COMBO BY PHILIPS

Cannot do this on a combo unit. There is a chip that senses copy protection and prevents recording a copy-protected DVD to a VHS and vice-versa. Solution: Use an outboard DVD player or an outboard VHS VCR and try the recording with the video routed through a "stabilizer" box. The stabilizer (about $30 or less on Ebay) defeats the copy protection on MOST DVDs, but not all. It works with Netflix DVDs. Route the audio as usual. Audio is not protected.
