Rear projection is just that usually 3 projectors overlayed ontop of each other each in a different color. one or more of your projectors needs to be aligned, there is an option in the set up to do this manually where x's or +'s are displayed in the different colors and you need to move them so they are all overlayed ontop of each other. then when a picture of a person is projected you should only see one of them. how to get to that set up screen to preform the alighnment will differ from brand and model but all projection tvs have this some have a program to do it automatically. this works great when the tv is new but as they age manually adjusting is better nothing is as delicate as the human touch.

My Toshiba 53H71 rear projection TV's picture looks like double vision with a heavy tint outline how can I fix this???

Hi,
Double vision/ picture problem occurs due to failure of convergence output ICs in rear projection tv and it is common problem of projection tvs.
Please replace convergence output ICs in tv to solve the issue, there is convergence repair kit available for $70 on This Site that has required parts/ ICs, instructions about how to replace ICs etc for a handy person.
Hope these info will help.
Thanks.

Red color outline and double vision

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit wiith instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms
  • Screen Looks 3-D
  • Colors wont align
  • Screen may look distorted or warped
  • No Audio/Video - makes a chirping sound.

yes the convergence problem leaves a shadow of red or blue like an outline around the picture, sometimes part of the screen some times the entire screen.

Getting double images on screen like outlines on images

Your TV has a failure of its convergence output ICs and perhaps some of the convergence circuit's other associated parts. The part numbers for the ICs are on the IC face. They can be purchased thru Hitachi or online at MCM Electronics.

Picture Problem!! and its not convergence (Double vision except for middle of screen)

Could be pin correction circuit or your picture tubes could be worn out . Sometimes when the crt's get weak the edges seem not as clear as the center of the screen . Give model number if you think the pin correction may be your problem but, the tv is pretty old and avg. life for them is 12 to 15 years when the picture tubes start to degrade . Good luck
