I had the same problem with both my Biostar 550 and Gigabyte P35 motherboards, both of which use Realtek ALC888 HD audio. Its got lots of fancy eq and effects but a crippled record mixer with greyed out sliders. I emailed realtek and they responded that its a Mixer Record type audio mixer only and follows microsofts HD audio specification...so blame microsoft or Realtek...or both. There is NO workaround for this.
The solution is to use a sound card with AC97 audio or if youre lucky enough to find a newer one with HD audio and a less crippled mixer. Problem being the industry seems to have embraced Realtek who seems fixated on offering partially disabled mixers. I purchased a Diamond Xtreme 7.1 sound card from officmax for 30 bux. They also have a 5.1 version for 20 bux. The main rec output is set to a fixed level but the individual rec. sliders ARE enabled. Recorded audio ends up being about 10db low but you can always boost it n post production using a recording program like audacity (which the sound card comes with - there are newer versions of audacity available so dont use the included version). - The only way to get FULL functionality
- ALL sliders is to find an older AC97 audio card. There are good ones and bad ones so it may take a few. Try the Diamond Xtreme card first and if you dont like it you can always take it back. This link is for the $30 verson. http://www.officemax.com/omax/catalog/sku.jsp?skuId=21080508&searchString=diamond%20xtreme&category_Id=null
Dont hesitate to send Realtek a "concerned" (not nasty) email about this. Hopefully If they get enough...they MAY take it seriously...but I wouldnt cross my fingers.

SOURCE: no recording?
In garageband when you have the gtrack set up , it will show you 2 options for input source 'USB Audio CODEC'. This is because you have 2 lines in, the mic and the jack. Make sure you have picked the correct one to record the vocals...otherwise it is expecting the jack input and will record nothing.
Hope this helps!
