I have a Panasonic 5.8 ghz digital answering system. I cannot figure out how to lower the volume when messages are left. What do I need to do to lower the volume on my answering machine so that when messages are left they will not be overheard by others?

Using the large navigator key in the middle, it is easy to adjust the volume while talking and listening message.
You just have to remember there are 3 (three!) ringers: one on each handset (each requires you to set the volume to zero) and one on the base that isn't terribly intuitive to silence: you hold down the 'down' volume and then hold it an additional two seconds and that puts it to silent mode. Also the base volume must be set to zero if you don't want the 'Call Screening' (where it plays the incoming caller's message at the last preset volume level) feature active.
for any more detailed help on this issue you can refer the manual as follows
http://phone.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/panasonic/kxtg5480.html
just click the link and download the manual.
thanks.

The answering machine is not recording messages left by callers. there is an A showing on the screen instead of the number of messages that used to appear on the screen

Without knowing the model of your VTech answering system I can't give you a definite answer, but apparently you have your system set on announce instead of record. Enter the model of your phone into the search box at
http://www.vtechphones.com/vtechphones/index.cfm/support/general/manuals/
to download a copy of the manual.

To set the ringer volume of the handset, press the CONF/FUNCTION button(lower left) on the handset, scroll to Ringer Setting using the up or down arrow keys of the navigator key(center of the handset), press the right arrow key to select Ringer Setting. I bought a home with the Panasonic KX-t7731 phone system installed. We have a new phone number. I am unable to set up voicemail (although voicemail answers) and I am unable to retrieve my messages. Help!

What's answering the calls, is it the Panasonic system or the central office? When you figure that out, and it's locally, then post back with the model number of your phone sytsem cabinet and whether you dial 107 or 115 ot get into voice mail, or the message is left in the central office.
