Open Question

The machine seems to be locked up inside

The machine has been in a shop for a couple of years, not used and now i can't seem to get things moving inside. I cleaned and oiled, the motor works but the belt just slips and nothing moves like something is in the way.

SOURCE: How do you change the belt on a Singer 7462?

Hi,
By removing the top cover, or the turning wheel cover,
you will be able to see the belt.
If the belt is not broken, then try to adjust the belt tension,
by adjusting either the height of the motor, or the tension wheel.

The black bobbin case that the bobbin sites in is not supposed to move at all, on the right hand side of the bobbin case you will see two screws, if you slacken them off you can push the guide bar closer to the bobbin case leaving enough thread to pass through the gap.

SOURCE: the belt is not moving when i pres the pedlle

it sounds like your machine may be seizing up. it needs a service. oil all moving parts with good sewing machine oil (not 3-in-1 oil) and work the oil n b turning handwheel by hand for a while.

if this does not free-up machine have it serviced by a tech.

Balance wheel doesn't move needle

You really should clean and oil/grease the entire thing. Dust, lint, old oil and grease can harden making your machine not run properly. Another thing that may be causing you issues is dried up and gunked up grease on some inner gears. Take off as many access panels as you can and use a tooth brush to remove yellowed dry grease from gears, replace the grease with one made for sewing machines. Lightly grease... just a little dab will do it. Turn the machine by hand to work the grease around the gears.

Make sure it's out of bobbin winding mode. Do you remember if you had had to replace the motor belt or had to take the hand wheel off for some reason?

Take the hand wheel off and look for a funny looking lock washer (typically has ears on the outside of the washer and two fingers pointing toward the center of the washer that fits into two grooves) The two fingers are slightly angled... the angled fingers should be pointing OUTWARD when you put it on. This seems counter intuitive but it must be inserted this way for your machine to work correctly. Put it back together and see if it works.

I like to use Liquid Wrench for especially stubborn machines that have been sitting. Don't use WD40 it will free up rusty things but you have to wipe it down well and re-oil. Liquid Wrench is petroleum spirits (kerosene) and graphite, much better for the machine in the long run.

Good luck.

Embroidery machine is making grinding noise and carriage doesn't move. Then, screen says malfuntion, turn machine off.

Just because the hoop holder has been moved during transportation. Shut down the machine, manually bring hoop holder in central position in both X and Y, it will restart.

Elna Lock L1 won't keep thread chain

for a manual try elna customer service
as for the needle, check to see if it's inserted correctly in the needle holder
the needle must be pushed all the way up into the needle holder--
the flat side goes to the back side of the machine
you also mentioned that you broke a needle, when a needle is broken some times it can cause the machine to go out of time, which means it has to be taken to a sewing machine repair shop & be retimed,,
and it needs to be serviced.

Baby lock bl4-736d won't stitch--It has not been used in about 6 years. It worked fine the last time it was used. I don't know where to oil or even if that is the problem.

If your machine has not been used in six years then it could have siezed up. If there is a threading up diagram inside the front looper cover then it may show the red oiling dots too. These are usually on the upper and lower loopers where they move through another metal part. And sometimes a red spot at the back of the stitching platform to oil internally.

But firstly, can you turn the flywheel manually towards you? Does the loopers and needles move through a stitch sequence when you do? If there is no movement and the flywheel is turning then probably a gear has failed in the main drive shaft, many machines have nylon gears now to lessen need for lubrication but the gear itself may split as it ages. Can be replaced but usually means dismantling most of the machine to do so. Definitely something for the BL technician though.

If you can move the flywheel and things are moving then I'd suggest you oil all the metal moving parts, rub some oil onto both blades and give everything a good clean out. Then manually turn it through stitch sequence several times to spread the oil, then plug it in and see if the machine will now run. Just take it slow and gentle. Then change the needles and thread it up and see if you can get it to chain off.

Hope this helps.

I have an old kenmore 12 stitch sewing machine that the needle sometimes looks like it wants to more and other times it just sits there. the shaft that runs across the inside under the top cover will not...

Sounds like your machine is in need of a good cleaning and oiling. If you aren't handy with taking apart things and getting them back together I suggest taking it to a sewing machine repair place. In the meantime you can try oiling any spots you can access. Use sewing machine oil, found at any sewing/fabric store and even most Wal-Marts.
