The meter is an amp indicator, therefore wired in line with charger, if batteries are charging and meter is not indicating then the meter is bad. if batteries are full then it will move very slightly when batteries are low it moves more

Are you sure the meter is in series w/the battery w/no shunt? the meter is good and can be deflected w/a few ma of dc current.

SOURCE: After installing new batteries(BC12350) on my Jet

Do you have the owners manual? From doing this job, I always try to start with the most simple solution first. Make sure that the batteries are hooked up properly. Then my second suggestion would be to make sure that the front battery has a good connection. Then third would be that the back battery has a major load on it, for it to be getting warm. Like maybe it is grounding out. You can check this by disconnecting the positive cable and reading the continuity from the cable to ground. It should not have continuity. That should give you a place to start. If this doesn't solve the problem let me know . And I will help more.

2001 Electraglide Ultra..battery won't charge. Where do I test the output of the Volt. Reg.?

Hi Thomas, perform the following tests:
1. Fill acid type batteries to proper levels.
2. Charge battery overnight at 1-2 amps you need 12.5 volts or better after charging.
3. Hook up battery positive cable, then with your multimeter on the milliamp scale connect one lead to the negative battery post and the other lead to the ground cable. Meter should read 3 milliamps or less, 10 milliamps with a radio, 15 milliamps with radio and CB. If your meter reads higher you need to isolate the circuit by pulling fuses and circuit breakers one at a time and observe meter for drop in aprerage then get out your test light and track down the short in that circuit.
3. Make sure all connections are clean and tight especially the negative cable at both ends.
4. Hook up volt meter to battery and start engine, if meter falls below 9.5 v while cranking replace battery.
5. With engine running at 3600 RPM battery should read 14.3-14.7 volts if not continue tests.
6. Unplug voltage regulator from alternator at crankcase by front of primary cover.
7. To test voltage regulator go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8EjV0IjW9Q
8. With ohm meter, one lead grounded, touch alternator pin meter should read infinity, if not replace stator.
9. With ohm meter, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read 0.1 to 0.2 ohms on 1989 and later models. 0.2 to 0.4 ohms 1988 and earlier models, if not replace stator.
10. With volt meter set on AC scale, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read
16 to 20 volts AC for every 1000 RPM'S 1989 and later and 19 to 26 volts AC for every 1000 RPMS. If not replace rotor.

Have a jet 3 power chair will not take a charge, can't tell that iy is charging

Cathey when you plug in the charger look at the rear of the chair at the meter if the chair is charging then the meter will indicate some amperage reading when it is fully charged the meter will read zero. Also turn on the chair and if the lights are scrolling or flashing it shows that the charger is plugged in. Now if after the meter reads zero (if it ever does) the lights on the joystick should all be lit indicating a full charge. If you aren't getting all the lights and the meter indicated the charger was working then you need to replace the batteries Hope this helps

Shop rider sovereign voltage indication. Brand new fully charged

hi Richard,

Does the scooter actually lose power after the 3 leds show ?

If it is losing power then a suggest to try some other batteries to confirm dodgy batteries, check the terminal connections etc.

If it does not lose power then the volt meter is at fault, if you can check the voltage before riding then after it shows only 3 leds , if there is a big drop, check the charger first to make sure the batteries are getting fully charged.

GeWiz.,

2003 Ultra shuts off while riding

how many lights are you running? try disconnecting the battery and hooking up a shunt with a volt meter or a current meter inline. then check the current with different accessories or everything running. If you have a big load and stereo amp you may need to upgrade the charging system and the Circuit Breaker or try a aftermarket CB.
It happened once to me, riding slow, new pavement, very hot day, spot lights and stereo amp on.
Have a new CB on order but, put on another 4000 miles without another problem????

With all DC systems on no negative Ah readings

The shunt needs two (2) wires coming from it to your amp meter. If the meter reads backwards polarity, reverse the shunt leads.
