Question about Acer TravelMate 2300 Notebook

USB Ports Stopped Working

I have an Acer TravelMate 2300 laptop with three USB ports. All ports were working fine until I turned the machine on the other day and my wireless optical mouse would not work. I tried a wired optical mouse and a USB thumb drive, neither of which work. When I plug in a wireless controller from my son’s video game, the power and link lights on the controller illuminate, but the computer does not detect the controller. All of the items I mention above worked on this machine previously.

I checked the properties of all of the USB ports in the device manager, and it says that they are all working properly. I removed the drivers for each of them and rebooted. Windows reinstalled the drivers automatically upon reboot, but the ports still do not see USB devices. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I checked the BIOS by pressing F2 during bootup, but I don't see a USB setting. The setup utility is PhoenixBIOS. Is there another way to view the BIOS?

  • schwartz_r Jan 07, 2009

I found a BIOS update, but when I tried to flash it I got an error "Cannot flash if memory managers (e.g. EMM386) present". I also did a system restore to a point when the ports were working, with no luck. I think I am going to restorin the system to factory settings. It's a pain to reload all of my apps, but I'm out of ideas.

Thanks for your help. Turns out that I'm not able to reload the OS since Acer didn't start putting eRecovery on their machines until after 2004 when this unit was build, and I don't have the recovery disks. Sounds like your experts think it's a hardware problem anyway. Still, it's a shame that I own a legal copy of WinXP that came with the machine, but there is no way for me to reload it :-). Thanks again for your help.

Well let me be the first to say I see you have skills. All of your troubleshooting is exactly by the book. The only thing I see that was not checked is the CMOS (BIOS) setup screen to make sure that the USB function is enabled there. Good luck and let me know how it goes, we have a couple of hundred years of experience at FixYa so keep me updated if you have any more problems.

Well I have two computers that are different BIOS..the older one has only one way to BIOS pressing F8 (unique to BIOS). Newer machines have, for the lack of a better term, a boot order BIOS. Where you can change booting from HDD, to CD, etc. And a BIOS SETTINGS where Plug n Play, Time/Date ,etc. From the material I have researched if you have a USB controller in Device Manager, then you should have it in BIOS settings. The only other little quirk that USB devices have is that drivers must be loaded first, then plug in devices... The only other solution I can think of is for you to flash your BIOS to upgrade it to the latest features. Once I found a BIOS upgrade on my computer manufacturers site, other times it was at BIOS site...hope this helps. Keep us updated on your progress. We'll stay with you until your situation is solved.

Yea are you could just do a default to factory setting on your BIOS by taking the battery out of the motherboard and wait a couple of minutes, then put it back in....however, be aware, right down all of the CMOS settings cause sometimes they don't all come back. and you're sure you don't see a Ports & Peripherals settings in BIOS?

Before you re-install..I posted your problem on the Expert's Forum..give it a day or two see if someone else picks it up..a new set of eyes may see something.

Well I got answer from Experts forum we use and basically it sounds like your going to need some bench work on your motherboard. Bring it in to a local repair and see if you are getting any power to the USB ports.

Hope this helps..please rate this solution accordingly. Thanks

Hello,

I'm guessing your USB ports don't work or does it always ask you to install them. If you have your Windows XP license key at hand, please try downloading and installing the following...

Acer TravelMate 2350 XP Chipset Driver

Reboot. It might ask you to do a reactivation, or not.
Please recheck if your USB ports still work. If not, restart your machine, hit F8 continously until you get many options - choose the option "Safe mode" and press Enter. Check if it picks up USB in this Safe mode.

What you can also try, is that you have 3 different USB 2.0 ports on your machine. Try each one separately and see if one of them works. I would also recommend to see if the USB device you are trying to use is actually functional.

Usb ports

You'll want to verify your computer recognizes your usb ports.
In device manager, look to see that you don't have anything with an exclamation mark, question mark, or red X on it. Make sure you have the usb ports listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers. If nothing shows, your usb ports may be dead. Depends on the age of your computer and what might have happened to them.

Device manager- right-click My Computer and go to properties, then select the hardware tab.
