  • Jose Nov 06, 2012

Thank you for your comments. It doesn't read any CD, original or copy. But I don't want to throw it away. I know it's fault of planned obsolescence so I am trying to fight against it, as everybody here, I think so.

Could be But most of the time when a tech says a laser assy is bad Its not. It could be a simple grating adj on the pickup assy that alot of techs dont have a clue what it is. This alighnment requires speacial tools and is not advised if you dont know how to do it. What it does is adj. the laser postion onto the prism inside the pickup assy. Or youer problem could be a tracking/focus Gain or offsetr alighnment. This has to be dont looking at the rf waveform from the pickup assy drive circuit via an oscilliscope. These are not unfortantly a consumer adjustment as well. If its an inexpensive player, such as more then a year or so old or under 75 bucks , it probably wont pay to have someone look at it. My friend , this is the times of the throwaway world!! Good Luck

OK lets start off by getting rid of the CD lens cleaner (CD cleaners do more damage then good). Now first we need to clean that lens with a DVD lens clearner (finer cleaning surface). Try to run the DVD cleaning disk twicw (no more) and try to play a DVD. If this does not work. You may have to test the laser power. get a schematic for the DVD that you have, and use it to let you know the specific power measurement of the power, This is done by using a laser power meter, you may not have one, so this becomes a moot point, but on the off chance that you do, use the laser power meter to measure the laser energy and make sure it is to specs as seen on the schematic. If you do not have a laser power meter., well I hate to tell you this but you may have to get a new unit. See the problem is the process of fixing this problem is simple if you have the right equipment, but if you don't you are at a disadvantage.

SOURCE: philips DVP642 DVD Player "No disc" problem

if its still under warranty, do that.

if it's not, try taking it back to the store and asking for a replacement. don't let the floor salesman tell you no. insist on speaking to the manager. my strategy is to: "be polite, appear slightly stupid, and dont take no for an answer" it works 80-90% of the time.

if you cant get anywhere (or dont want to try that route), then you have nothing to lose. open the case and try to clean the mechanism and lens

two screws on either side of the unit, and i think another 4 screws on the back side. this will allow you to pull the top cover off the unit.

clean the mechanism, and clean the lens. you can buy cleaner if you want, but i just use a soft cloth and some "no-streak" type window/glass cleaner (windex)

clean your disks as well. this DVD player seems to be sensitive to scuffs and dust more than some other players. you just have to be persistent.

or you could buy another DVD player. at $60, its really a pretty good deal anyhow.

good luck

SOURCE: DVP642/ 37 DVD player says "NO DISK" with any disk.

Usually if there is a NO DISC error, and the lens is verified clean, there is either dust in the laser assembly (use a can of compressed air to clean it out) or a loose laser assembly cable. Also check to make sure the lens can bob (wiggle around), and that it can slide back and forth.

The emergency eject is underneath, its a small slot. Insert a toothpick at one end and slide to the other end to open the tray.

Dvd wont read it says there is no disc

Hello,

how long have you been using this player? I suspect the laser (lens) of the player. I think the laser (lens) is weak that's why it cannot read data/files on DVD discs.

To confirm if actually its a laser problem, insert an Audio CD into the player and see if will play. If it plays, then obviously, your laser (lens) is weak. But if it doesn't play Audio CD, then it might still be the laser (lens) or a mechanism problem.

Get a lens cleaner, use it to clean the lens. If that doesn't solve the problem, get a screw driver, open the player's cover so that you can gain access to the lens, use a cotton board to clean the surface of the lens. This should clean dust or dirt that might be on the lens.

If non of the above solves the problem, then know that you need to replace the laser to a brand new one.

To replace the lens, remove the bad laser, use it as a sample to get exactly the same type and do the replacement. Note that replacing a laser (lens) needs a professional touch, so if you cannot replace the laser, get it to a repairman to fix it for you.

Once this us done, your player will play all DVD discs again.

Good luck.

Won't read d d keeps saying bad disk

Hello, welcome to Fixya!

Was this player playing previously? And how long have you been using this player? I suspect the lens of the player. Once the lens of the player becomes weak, it won't play discs any longer.

The first thing my mind goes to, is the lens. The lens id responsible for reading/loading data on discs. So if the lens is unable to read the disc, there is no way the player is going to play the disc.

To confirm if actually its a laser problem, insert an Audio CD into the player and see if will play. If it plays, then obviously, your laser (lens) is weak. But if it doesn't play Audio CD, then it might still be the laser (lens) or probably, a mechanism problem.

Marantz cd44-minimal sound when playing cd. Amplifier (rx163) works with tuner. I have tried cleaning head but with no sound improvement. Any suggestions?

I can't find any pictures or reference to a CD44 but if it's a CD player there would be no point in cleaning the laser lens if ity makes ANY sound at all. The bits don't get louder. Ones and zeros don't change. Look for an output control. Many players had fixed and variable outputs.
