It sounds that any capacitor have been busted out. Contact any service technician. Do not check the set, by power it ON. It might make things worse.

Burning smell from tv

UNPLUG SET ASAP AND DO NOT TRY TO TURN IT ON OR POWER IT UNTIL IT IS OPENED AND EXAMINED BY A QUALIFIED PERSON, no TV is worth the risk of a fire and if smoke that risk exists.

It sounds that the power supply regulator section or main board has the fault. Check it with the help of schematics. If you are not handy, seek any technician's support.

My Jvc tv has horizontal lines going across it and makes a staticy sound. And there was a smoky smell in the air around it. There is still picture and audio but we have unhooked it from the wall. We tried...

possible yoke has overheated and this was the cause of smoke smell.
has to be replaced as horizontal deflection circuit has blown output transistor. There is also a retrace capacitor that may have to be replaced along with it. Regards, meder's tv service.

When I plug in my 36" Zenith TV the screen stays black, a clicking and popping noise comes from the back and I smell acrid smoke like from an electrical fire. What is going on, and is it repairable?

Caution: Never power on the TV set again until this fault is retified.
It is anode arcing takes place inside the TV. Its final anod cap is arcing with neighboring surroundings. A smoke like fume along with a foulin smell will be there. It is repairable. Its Line Output Transformer [LOT] shoud be replaced with similar type and number. Before connecting the anode cap to the final anode of the picture tube, cleen the anode hole and surrounding area with some sort of cleaning solvent [we uses pure turpentine for that purpose], throughly, and wipe it out to dry out well.

Magic smoke GONE!
Seriously, the main power supply has failed, and requires service. You are probably well past the warranty period, but check with the TV's service center - that information should be in the documents that came with the TV.

It won't turn on

The smell of something burning is not a good sign. The clicking sound you are hearing could be a relay or breaker kicking in and out as a result of whatever is wrong.

This could be cause by:
1. A problem in the power supply.
2. A problem with the Horizontal Output Stage.
3. The Flyback transformer.

Someone gave me a TV once that had the same problem. I determined that it had a bad flyback transformer. I replaced the transformer and the TV worked about 5 secs before I saw some black smoke come out of the new flyback. I turned it off right away and realized that something else was bad that caused the original flyback to burn up. The same thing was causing the new flyback to go as well. It turned out to be a shorted, 50 cent hi-speed switching diode. Fortunately, because I had turned the set off quickly when the 2nd flyback started to smoke, once I replaced the diode, the TV was fixed.

If you want to get it working again, you'll need to have it serviced.

Good luck,
- Jim
