Does the Blue screen appear before it shuts down?  If so, what info does it give?  What programs are you running, games/internet surfing, when it shuts down?  How long has it been since you have cleaned it(compressed air)?  Are you blocking the air vents, either on the back, sides or bottom of the computer?

Clean fans of dirt, dust, any thing that is obstucting air flow. Are you using the laptop on a soft surface? Try a laptop cooler, it sounds like the components, CPU,Graphic card, PSU are getting to a temp that causes the laptop to auto shut down as not to damage the components

SOURCE: Laptop shuts down often when using battery power

Often, this would be a battery problem given the age of the laptop. A way to verify is if the AC adapter/charger is plugged in and the problem persist, then it would be "something else".

Hope that this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: Bought a HP Pavilion 17

Sounds Like Video Failure...
If you were Gaming On THat Laptop, You Probably Overstressed The Graphics Chip/GPU..

Other things that would cause the shut downs would be, Incorrect or Faulty AC Adapter, Make sure you use a 19.5v 90Watt.. Not the 65 Watt..

Failing or Bad Ram, Misseated RAM... Open port to RAM on underside of laptop, Pull The RAM and reseat it..

Make sure Hard Drive (s) are securely seated..

When you say it shuts down, does it simply turn off straight away? If so I would say it has a faulty power connection. If it goes through the whole 'Windows is shutting down' processes then it maybe the motherboard which is faulty. Either way it sounds like quite a serious issue.

It's more likely your laptop is frozen. You will need to completely shut down the laptop. Remove the battery and remove the power cable. Leave for 30 minutes off. Then restart the laptop with the power cable connected only (without the battery).

My hp dv 2000 shut down while working and then by pressing the power key it resumes to the same position. this problem repeats every 2-3 minute of working. Please solve this problem.

this problem can't be called as ur machine's shuttin down...This is called sleep mode...
Well this usually happens with laptop's.. This happens when ur laptop's battery run's out of power.. now if u think that u keep the power cord plugged in & still it happens, open the battery socket at the back of laptop, clean the battery terminals & the slot where its placed.. Now restart the system & go to control panel.. go to power options & check all ur settings.. There might be a setting named stand by time.. just change it to never..and the option, Turn Of Display... change it to never..
Now try it out
Hope this helps u out...and if doesn't then feel free to ask again

If u like my post, please rate me up.. i really need some good ratings..
Thanks !!!

It seems to me that your Processor of the Laptop has got effected to and unbalance current supply. As you know that replace processor would work i would suggest you to claim its waranty before replacing new processor.

Battery and/or overheating or ?

It is possible that the battery is not charging at all and can't pass electricity to the board. But if its 3yo, its probably really dead.

Also, if you can see a fan not working at all, overheating is also possible.

It is also possible that there is a tiny foreign object capable of conducting electricity, such as human hair, that gets activated at the slightest movement of the laptop by shorting some pins on your board.

So I would suggest to observe more or clean the inside of your laptop if you know how to remove your keyboard.

Shutting off

i have the same problem...laptop randomly shuts down, but its even done it within a minute of turning it on so i don't think its a heat issue. Sometimes it'll run for over an hour with no problem and never shut down, but other times it randomly shuts down sometimes within a minute, sometimes maybe 10 mins, sometimes 30 mins or more ...its maddening! i'd love to find a solution if anyone's found one. Thanks.
