My Kenmore Stacked Washer has gunk in the middle of the agitator under the cup that dispenses the fabric softener. How does the fabric softener dispense? Does it spin out the top, or does water come up through the agitator, or does the fabric softener go down through the agitator? Or is the gunk I'm seeing a lubricant? It is halfway down the agitator shaft and very hard to get to. It smells bad and I'm not sure what to do.

Re: gunk in middle of agitator
The fabric softener spins out of the cup after the wash cycle when spinning the water out of clothes, then the washer fills back up for the rinse w/ your softener having been dispensed. is there a nut at the bottom of your agitator where you see the gunk? If so you can take the agitator out by removing the nut but be careful of the little parts that make the agitator agitate. Do not disturb these little parts if you don't know about them. Does the gunk smell like grease or a mechanics garage? If so chances are it is a lubricant and should not be removed replace the cap and your softener cup and continue enjoying your machine.

Believe it or not the agitator will come off. Look under the fabric softener cup. There should be a fastener (nut or bolt) to loosten. Give the cup a good cleaning while you have it off.
Once the nut is removed you can work the agitator off.
Gently remove the fabric softener cup off of the top of the agitator
Using a ratchet, an extension and socket; then remove the retaining bolt under the fabric softener cup.
The agitator will lift off after the bolt is removed.
Drop the agitator in place. Install bolt.... tighten bolt with ratchet, extension and socket. Install the fabric softener cup.
Some of these models had the fabric softener cup in the top of the agitator but I don'tbelieve this model does .You will have to do it the old fashion way and wait till the rinse cycle starts and open the lid an pour it in.. Or get one of those Downy fabric softener balls for dispensing they work great and you wont have to stand by the washer to try to time it right...Hope this helps GOOD LUCK
The second rinse is when the softener cup is being flushed. Remove the dispenser and clean and inspect the housing to be sure no softener is gumming up the holes and blocking the water flow into the machine.
If it's located at the top of the agitator. It pulls off. Pull straight up. After you have removed it. Run hot water through it. Take a old toothbrush and brush down inside it. You can use Mean Green to help cut the goo. Now rinse and shake over and over. Pop it back on.

Okay...the cone actually goes inside the the two other pieces you mention. The cone is to be inserted upside-down. That is, the opening of the cone should be facing UP. The way this fabric softener dispenser is supposed to work is, you place fabric softener thorugh the opening of the dispenser. The cone actually holds it like a cup. When the washer goes through the initial spin cycle before the rinse cycle begins, the centrifugal force of the washer spinning forces the fabric softener out of the cone and into the wash tub.
The dispenser assembly should just snap right on top of the agitator. If the dispenser does not stay on securely any longer, you may have to replace it with a new one. You can find replacements at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in the same model number you provided and look for item number 1 under the "Motor, Basket and Tub Parts" heading.

PS It is also a good idea to periodically remove the dispenser and soak it in some hot water to get rid of accumulations of hardened softner. They will clog from time to time.
Fabric softener dispensers are notorious for getting all gummed up and clogged. Remove the dispenser cup and soak in some hot water to dissolve all residue. While you have the dispenser removed check under the dispenser cap in the agitator for gummy residue as well. Clean with hot water. There should also be an agitator seal cap under the dispenser. Make sure the cap and rubber o-ring are seated properly. Last of all, if the dispenser has a cone shaped cup inside, make sure it is inserted cone-side UP. The cup is designed to allow fabric softener to roll down the sides of it, NOT hold it. I hope this helps.
