Question about Canon PowerShot A80 Digital Camera

Powershot A80 error E18

I turn on the camera. It makes a clicking noise like it's trying to open the lens. The lens does not open. I then get an E18 error code on the flip-open window.

Lens errors (E18 errors on Canons) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Have Canon PowerShot A80. New batteries, turn on and it automatically turns off with a buzzing/clicking noise... Window shows error E18

The E18 error is fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 40% of lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty they're worth a try:

My Canon PowerShot A80 Digital Camera on and then off

If the E18 error code comes along with unusual noises while moving the lens, there may be a problem with the mechanics. Just tap the camera on a solid surface a few times. I had the same problem and tapping helped just fine.

Canon PowerShot SD200 E18 Error

The "E18" error code indicates an error that involves the lens unit or lens cover. The grinding noise you hear-to my regret- means that len's mechanism is malfunction. This type of problem could be fixed by professional only.
