Hi, doesn't really matter which, what is important is what ever it is you choose, it should be the same/consistent all through out the wireless network/system. example, if you choose wep $ key is 12345 in your router/AP, then all you wifi clients should be using wep $ key of 12345.
Choosing or not choosing what wireless security mode to use is not preventing you to log unto the internet, they are designed that you can securely communicate/acces the router/ap and if granted acces, the router/ap will then be your gateway, so first you must be connected/logged on to the router/ap before you can share its internet.
Hope this be of some help/ pls post again how things turn up. Kind regards.

- Hi again jpeezy,
By default, your security setting is disabled, therefore no need for WPA or WEP not unless the Router/AP has been configured already and set it up with WPA or WEP. You can restore the Router/AP to default/factory setting (no security) by pressing the reset button for about 10seconds+ or until all the led lights flash. The reset button is at the bottom of the unit.
Another thing you can try is start all over again. Remove all connections to the R/AP, and reconnect your internet modem to your PC. Restore all IP settings in your PC. Just make your PC connect to the internet without the R/AP. When you are sure you can connect to the internet, run the installer CD of the Belkin R/AP without connecting the router yet. It's preferable to do this since if you do it manually, you will have to configure 2 IP adds. Your particular brand/model uses Router > 192.168.2.1 and Access Point > 192.168.2.254 and it gets more complicated. After running the CD, then follow the instructions like connect your R/AP etc.
An online manual for your unit is available at (http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?lid=en&pid=F5D8230-4&aid=6152&scid=0&fid=2836&fn=P74304-C_F5D8230-4_man.pdf)
Post again for any developments. Kind regards.
