Question about Sharp R-820B Convection/Microwave Oven

2 Answers

Metal turntable's enamel chipped, so sparks fly.

I own a Sharp R-820JS-F (http://www.sharpusa.com/products/ModelLanding/0,1058,1356,00.html) which is a combination microwave and convection oven. It has an enameled metal turntable that's blue and speckled like those gold-miner camping mugs and teapots. Somehow, the enamel on the edge of the turntable chipped and, now, it's the Fourth of July if I run it. Of course, I stopped running it the moment I noticed. Is there any way to repair the turntable?

Since this is a convection oven and grill, I'm not too sure about using a glass plate. And, the part is available to order, I'm just trying to be eco-friendly and frugal by keeping my existing one in use.

Well, we initially bougth some Rustoleum epoxy enamel spray paint, but, upon getting it home, found that it said that it wasn't to be used for high temperature applications.

Yesterday, I picked up a can of Dutch Boy (Sherwin Williams) "High-Temp" ("withstands 850ºF") spray paint at K-Mart. It specifically says "Use on grills and stoves" and notes that it's to be used on metal. So, it'll take getting hot and the substrate is fine, but what about those mysterious microwaves? Am I asking for trouble with that? Are they going to penetrate my paint and cause fireworkds in my microwave?

A little wandering around the 'Net has uncovered that they make so-called "engine enamel" paint. Obviously, it can get really hot and it's got "enamel" in the name. And, it comes in a wide array of colors, including "hot rod green" and "Ford blue"! Any thoughts on that?

Hi there HandyFolks,

The bare metal in a microwave is a problem. It needs to be insulated. I'd immediately rule out Black tape or epoxy.

Options:

  • Find a similarly sized glass tray to replace the metal one.
  • Paint over the chipped area with high temp enamel.
  • If the chipped area is small, use a small brush and dab the paint in.
  • Allow plenty of time to cure.
  • Then try a test storm.

    Hello again,.

I had Engine or Bar-B-Que paint in mind when I suggested it. It seems I skipped over some key detail there. My apologies. While I'm apologizing about things not mentioned..... Forgot to specify Pyrex for the plate. Can handle high temps and differentials.

As far as the microwaves penetrating the paint, it's supposed to. The paint is to keep the metallic portion of the plate from coming in contact with the ionized air created inside the microwave cavity. If it does it has the same effect as on it as the ionized air between a storm cloud and the ground, big spark.

What's different is after a lightning bolt the air is de-ionized. In a microwave, the air is continuously ionized so the lightning continues.

All the paint needs to do is keep the air from contacting the metal.

Let me know how it goes
    Mike

You can get Sharp parts from Encompass here.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.
See http://www.microtechfactoryservice.com/cap_test.html

If it went dead several seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.
See: http://www.microtechfactoryservice.com/xformer.html

If it goes dead or blows the breaker (or GFI) when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

Shape R-930 seems to have reset itself. No power,

Retaliate--reset it right back! haha
Most microwaves can be "reset" by unplugging for at least one hour. If that doesn't seem to fix it, you might want to contact Sharp so they can help you to get it fixed (or replaced, depending on your warranty). According to their website ( www.sharpusa.com ), it doesn't look like they have a contact phone number, but here is the link to their product inquiry web form: http://www.sharpusa.com/global/ContactUsProdSupp/1,1878,,00.html

Good luck! :)
