I ordered from Home Depot and had delivered to home. They used ZERO packing materials and it arrived broken. This was how it was packed. No padding what so ever. It is honeycombed underneath, so it has plastic fins. Very Rigid plastic. Don't drop it!
Pieces were falling out as I returned it to Home Depot. Oh yeah they don't necessarily pay to return it and store personnel are aggressive questioning it. So

  1. call up whomever you order from and ask them for extra padding.
  2. have a witness like I did when you open...and take photos.
  3. I plan to use this as a kayak rack. BUT my kayak has a custom cart so it is supported & cradled by the wheels. I just (I hope) lift the kayak with wheels into truck bed for loading.
  4. autoanything had cheapest prices and a cash rebate at fat wallet. Google checkout offered me some kind of free assurance the product would be ok and I opted in that too.
  5. Home Depot declined my review about the product arriving damaged. Don't trust reviews.
  6. Don't drive without this being secured. If it falls, I expect it will shatter.;..since it did not withstand UPS shipping. (Yeah, they do throw boxes).
  7. This is drop shipped from CabRak...so they are at fault for poor packing.

Delivery

It was rather incompetent of Home Depot to set up a delivery of something when they have no stock. It is an unlikely scenario and the truth is they probably did have stock but it was likely "stolen" by another over-competitive salesperson to fill another order in a "deliberate" breakdown in communication. This isn't unusual and is easy to imagine considering there was an incentive to boost the sales of dishwashers in that area.

If you have already paid and part of the reason you bought that dishwasher was delivery and installation could be completed before the end of the year in order to qualify for the incentive, it constitutes a contract. You made a contract with Home Depot and they have broken that contract.
Their Maytag excuses aren't your problem and you should have no interest in them. Your contract is with the retailer and not the manufacturer or supplier.

I suggest you put your complaint in writing providing as much detail as possible and providing names of people you spoke to and times/dates of order, invoice numbers, phone conversations and so forth. Ask for a firm delivery date within a certain time and then say how much compensation you need for the lost rebate and general inconvenience.
Send it to the company managing director or CEO by old-fashioned mail that must be signed for when delivered. Tell them to reply within 14 days and then sit back and wait.

If the company is respectable you will certainly receive some compensation. If the company is not respectable they will do nothing and wait for you to sue, though you will demand your money back and go elsewhere and make it known you will do whatever you can to persuade your friends, neighbours, family, colleagues to do likewise.

What is a special order product?
Special order products are products that are not stocked in The Home Depot stores, but are available by placing a special order directly with the manufacturer. This allows The Home Depot to "extend the aisles" and provide you with additional products for your convenience. There are thousands of items available through our in-store Special Order program. Our Special Order manufacturers are experts at producing and shipping the items that are not typically on the shelves of our stores. Special order products can take up to 6 weeks to be delivered to the store. Most special order products are delivered to the store for the customer to pick up. Some products can actually be delivered straight to your doorstep. In either case, all special orders must be paid for at the time the order is placed.


How are special orders placed at the store?
If you would like to shop for a special order item in your local Home Depot, ask any store associate to see if a particular item can be ordered through our Special Order program. The store associate will then check by viewing the in-store special order catalogs to see if your product is available. Once you've confirmed the product specifications with the store associate, they will begin to enter the product data and your contact information into the store's Special Services System. Once your order is entered and reviewed, all you have to do is pay for the order. We'll take care of the rest.

How long does it take for special order products to arrive?Once the payment is received, a special order can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on the specifics of your order. The "expected delivery date" is actually printed on your Special Services Customer Invoice. You should confirm the expected delivery date with your local store when placing the order to assure the delivery timeline meets your needs.

Can special order products be shipped to my home?
Most special order products are shipped to The Home Depot store where the order was placed, but many may also be shipped directly to your home. You should check with your local store when placing the order to confirm the delivery method.

Where can I check the status of my special order?
You may contact the store where the order was placed or access the status online at www.homedepot.com/orderstatus. In either case, have your Special Services Customer Invoice available.

Can I return or cancel a special order or custom-made product?
