SOURCE: L1706 monitor power light flashes

A flashing power light often means the monitor isn't getting a signal. When you turn the monitor off and back on, do you see the brand logo for a few seconds? Try plugging it into a different computer to see if it comes on.

If plugging it into another computer doesn't work, it may be a bad power circuit in the monitor. A common problem with monitors is the capacitors going bad. If you're handy with a soldering iron, you can try replacing them yourself. Look here for pictures and instructions: Fix an LCD Monitor

Monitor is flashing in diffrent colors

This looks like main board panel display problem, but first! hook a spare monitor to the computer to rule it out, if okay! check the video cord to see if it can be detached from both ends and sub an other cable if possible. If everything checks out the HP Monitor is the problem, when the video is processed to the main board "attached to the back of the LCD screen" it is distributed to the display panel. This is not a cost effective to repair, replacement of the monitor is cheaper in the long run.

How to check the backlight life of my hp l1706

Claimed life for the lamp is 50,000 Hours, but in real life, no way to tell. You can look here what is failed in the backlight lamps, it can be from worn out (blacken ends is one sign of bad lamps, same as home fluorescent lamp), poor soldering works on the lamps. see pictures here: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
What is the problem with your monitor anyway?

My monitor won't sink in with my labtop it goes to

Whaen you right click on the Desk Top and select Properties. Then go to Settings. There you can configure two monitors. Easy enough. Now point to remember is that both the monitors, the LCD of the laptop and your ViewSonic should have the same resolution. If different, then there will be a conflict.
